CIRCULAR No. 57.

To the Secretary to the Local Committee.

SIR,-I am directed by the Hon'ble the Deputy Governor to forward a copy of the list of Holidays allowed in the Institutions under Education. the control of the Council of Education, and to request, that after ascertaining which of these holidays are observed in your district, and whether others should, with reference to the feelings of the people on the subject, be substituted for any of those specified, you will prepare and submit to Government a list not exceeding in the aggregate the number of days allowed in the Institutions under the Council of Education and embracing all those festivals most generally celebrated by the people of the district. To the Secretary to the Local Committee, Dacca-Kishnaghur.

SIR,-I am directed to transmit to you the accompanying copy of a letter from the Secretary to the Council of Education No. 1,121, Education. dated the 16th ultimo, and of its enclosure, relative to a plan introduced by the Hon'ble the Lieutenant Governor into the Colleges in the N. W. Provinces for encouraging the resort of pupils of a higher order of education to the Calcutta Medical College, and to inform you that the Hon'ble the Deputy Governor has been pleased to sanction the adoption of a similar plan in all the Colleges in Bengal.

2. The Committee are authorized to offer the terms indicated in the Lieutenant Governor's Circular letter to the holders of Senior Scholarships in the Institution under their charge, and should more than one of these be desirous of availing themselves of the advantageous means now proposed to them of qualifying themselves for the duties of Sub-Assistant Surgeons, you are requested to report the circumstance for the further orders of Government.

The Council coincide fully in the views and proposals of the Hon'ble the Lieutenant Governor, and beg strongly to recommend the adoption of a similar plan in all the Colleges of Bengal in time for promulgation at the ensuing Scholarship Examination.

Dated Head Quarters, 14th July 1847.

SIR, The Lieutenant Governor is desirous of doing all that is in his power to promote the resort of educated Natives General Department. from the N. W. P. to the Medical College in Calcutta, in order to qualify themselves for the situation of Sub-Assistant Surgeons.

2nd. The Council of Education at the Presidency have lately suggested with a view to this object that a scholarship should be devoted in each of the Colleges in these Provinces to the purpose in question.

3rd. The Committee are consequently authorized to make the following offer to the present holders of Senior English Scholarships in the College, as well as to those who may hereafter obtain stipends of that description. If any sufficiently qualified senior scholar is willing to proceed to Calcutta, for the purpose of studying Medicine in the Medical College at that place, he will be allowed to retain his stipend while so employed in addition to the usual allowance to the Medical Students of the College and for the term of three years from the time of his entry. If at the end of that term the Council of Education should see cause to recommend that a further period of study be allowed, the continuance of the stipend will be sanctioned for two additional years.

4th. It must be understood that the indulgence thus offered is conditional upon the progress which the student may make in his new pursuit while in Calcutta. If at any time the Council of Education should see
