The reader who honours me by perusing the following pages, will find that he is introduced to a new world, and that he is surrounded by a condition of things utterly unlike anything he has before known. He may feel that the writer has not made the most of these new circumstances for displaying the marvels of scientific and political progress in the far-off days.
