HISTORY

OF THE

ROMAN

REPUBLIC.

One handsome 12mo. volume. Paper cover 75 cts. Cloth $1.

"M. Michelet, in his History of the Roman Republic, first introduces the reade to the Ancient Geography of Italy; then by giving an excellent picture of the present state of Rome and the surrounding country, full of grand ruins, he excites in the reader the desire to investigate the ancient history of this wonderful land. He next imparts the results of the latest investigations, entire, deeply studied and clearly arranged, and saves the uneducated reader the trouble of investigating the sources, while he gives to the more educated mind an impetus to study the literature from which he gives very accurate quotations in his notes. He describes the peculiarities and the life of the Roman people in a masterly manner, and he fascinates every reader, by the brilliant clearness and vivid freshness of his style, while he shows himself a good historian, by the justness and impartiality with which he relates and philosophizes."

OF

MARTIN LUTHER,

GATHERED FROM HIS OWN WRITINGS

By M. MICHELET: translated by G. H. SMITH, F. G. S. One handsome volume, 12mo. Cloth 75 cts., Paper cover 50 cts. This work is not an historical romance, founded on the life of Martin Luther, is it a history of the establishment of Lutheranism. It is simply a biography, Gposed of a series of translations. Excepting that portion of it which has reference to his childhood, and which Luther himself has left undescribed, the translator has rarely found occasion to make his own appearance on the scene. * * ** · It is almost invariably Luther himself who speaks, almost invariably Luther related by Luther.-Extract from M. Michelet's Preface.

have made this book out of myself, out of my life, and out of my heart. I have derived it from my observation, from my relations of friendship and of neighborhood; have picked it up upon the roads. Chance loves to favor those who follow out one continuous idea. Above all, I have found it in the recollections of my youth. T. know the life of the people, their labor and their sufferings, I had but to interrogate my memory.Extract from Author's Preface.

HISTORY OF ENGLAND,

From the Invasion of Julius Cæsar to the Reign of Queen Victoria.

BY MRS. MARKHAM.

A new Edition, with Questions, adapted for Schools in the United States.

BY ELIZA ROBBINS,

Author of "American Popular Lessons," "Poetry for Schools," &c.

One Volume, 12mo. Price 75 cents.

There is nothing more needed in our schools than good histories; not the dry compends in resent use, but elementary works that shall suggest the moral uses of history, and the provi ence of God, manifest in the affairs of men.

Mr. Markham's history was used by that model for all teachers, the late Dr. Arnold, master of the great English school at Rugby, and agrees in its character with his enlightened and pious Views of teaching history. It is now several years since I adapted this history to the form and price acceptable in the schools in the United States. I have recently revised it, and trust that it may be extensively serviceable in education.

The principal alterations from the original are a new and more convenient division of paragraphs, and entire omission of the conversations annexed to the chapters. In the place of these I have affi red questions to every page that may at once facilitate the work of the teacher and the pupil. The rational and moral features of this book first commended it to me, and I have vsed it successfully with my own scholars.-Extract from the American Editor's Preface

MANUAL

OF

ANCIENT GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY.

BY WILHELM rütz,

PRINCIPAL TUTOR IN THE GYMNASIUM OF Duren.

Translated from the German.

EDITED BY THE REV. THOMAS K. ARNOLD, M. A.
Author of a Series of "Greek and Latin Text-Books."

One volume, 12mo.

$1.

This work supplies a desideratum in our classical Schools.

"At no period has History presented such strong claims upon the attention of the learned, as at the present day; and to no people were its lessons of such value as to those of the United States. With no past of our own to revert to, the great masses of our better educated are tempted to overlook a science, which comprehends all others in its grasp. To prepare a text-book, which shall present a full, clear, and accurate view of the ancient world, its geography, its political, civil, social, religions state, must be the result only of vast industry and learning. Our examination of the present volume leads us to believe, that as a text-book on Ancient History, for Colleges and Academies, it is the best compend yet published. It bears marks in its methodical arrangement, and condensation of materials, of the untiring patience of German scholarship; and in its progress through the English and American press, has been adapted for acceptable use in our best in intions. A noticeable feature of the book. is its pretty complete list of "sources of in formation" upon the nations which it describes. This will be an invaluable aid to the stude in his future course of reading '
