was glad to lean upon the shoulder of the nearest courtier; his eyes large and rolling about in a very unmanageable manner after every fresh person that entered the room; his beard very thin; his tongue too large for his mouth, so that he often looked as though he were eating imaginary food; while his skin was very soft and greasy-as soft as "taffety sarcanet" (whatever that may be), and this softness of his skin is accounted for by the fact that he never washed his hands; he never did more than give them a French polish with the wet end of a towel.

It was in those "piping times of peace "-it was beneath the rays of this "new-risen sun,' this "todlin king," with his clothes thickly quilted so as to be stiletto-proof, and often worn to rags; talking English in his native tongue: this murderer of Sir Walter Raleigh and of the English language-that John Milton was born.

The father was a man of strong will and stern integrity; he was also a devoted lover of intellectual culture. Reviews.

Advanced Manuals of Science and Art of Teaching; National Society. These are written for the subjects of specific schedules for English literature and training of Pupil Teachers. They are not strictly manuals of teaching only, but also treatises on the subjects themselves, and form a useful continuation of the preceding series favourably reviewed in this magazine. Each book is written by a competent author, and would be a useful addition to a pupil teacher's library.

Lines from the Poets. (Siege of Corinth, Lady of the Lake. The Traveller, Deserted Village, King John, Merchant of Venice.) National Society's Depository. These are useful selections of poetry, with lives of the authors, arguments of the selections, and copious notes, and are well suited to the ends they have in view.

Moffatt's Explanatory Reader, IV. This book is as well compiled, printed, illustrated, and bound as the preceding numbers of the series before favourably reviewed in this magazine.

Moffatt's Queen's Scholarship Examination Questions and Answers. This is a continuation for 1879 of the series previously issued, and will be of great use for those preparing for the next examination in 1880.

The recent outbreak of another Afghan War once more calls attention to Afghanistan. This country is fully described in the Editor's AFGHANISTAN; single copies 1d. post-free, or 1s. per dozen, for P.T's. and classes taking the Geography of Asia.
