Care of typewriting machines--Rules for tracing history of units.. Furlough to the Regular Army Reserve not barred by indebtedness__ III I Care of typewriting machines (Cir. No. 88, W. D., 1920).-1. Complaints are being received from typewriter manufacturing companies stating that they are called upon by officers in the field for adjustments to machines, which adjustments do not properly fall within their guarantees. Some of the adjustments not usually falling within the guarantees are the cleaning of machines clogged with dirt and dermax, setting up of machines dismantled for instruction purposes, making repairs obviously the result of careless and improper handling, etc. For such ad justments as do not fall within their guarantees, the typewriter companies make charges against the Government.

2. In order to reduce to a minimum such adjustments by the typewriter companies, all operators of typewriting machines will be informed that they are held responsible for maintaining in good condition the machines issued to them. They will be instructed in the proper management and care of their machines. Machines should be covered at the close of work; cleaned at least once each week; adjusted with carriage and key tension as light as is consistent with proper work; and only a small quantity of the best oil used for lubricating purposes.

3. As a general rule stencils for mimeograph will not be cut on typewriting machines used for other work. Where more than one machine is available in an office requiring both general work and stencils to be cut for mimeograph work, one machine should be designated for cutting stencils and used, as far as practicable, solely for that purpose.

4. Serviceable typewriting machines will not be dismantled for the purpose of giving instructions in typewriter mechanics, except such machines as are turned over to the education and recreation officer for that purpose.
