The examination in these subjects is almost always on paper, though some inspectors, especially in Languages, frequently take the work orally.

I-English Literature.

In preparing this subject special attention should be given to the etymology and derivation of words, as well as to their general meaning, and the special meaning in the particular passage. Practice in word-building is an excellent exercise, as it greatly assists composition and paraphrasing.* No examples of examinations in this subject are given as it is so extensive.

II.-Mathematics.

This subject includes, in the three stages, the same work as a pupil-teacher is required to do during his third, fourth, and fifth years.

1. What do you mean by the terms factor, power, and coefficient?

2. If a=1b=2, c=3, a nd d=4, find the value of this expression :

a2+2ab+b2 b2+2bc + c2 c2+2cd + d2

x2y + y2+yz2 - xy2 — y2z - xyz,

x2z + y2z+z3 - xyz - yz2 - xz2.

5. From a3-3a2b+3ab2 – b3, subtract - a3 + 3a2b− 3ab2 +b3 and find the numerical value of the answer when a = 4 and b=2.
