1. How are the four regular conjugations of French verbs distinguished? Give two examples of each.

2. Conjugate the verbs avoir and être in the present indicative, the future, and the subjunctive present.

3. How is the comparative and the superlative of adjectives formed? Give examples. State any exceptions that you can remember.

4. Translate-Notre chien est plus fidèle que le vôtre. J'en parlerai à mon cousin. Donnez-moi du pain et de la viande. N'avez-vous pas acheté du café?

5. Translate-Have you any good potatoes? This book is prettier than that. Our soup is better than theirs. The knife which I have given to my brother is good.

6. Give the plural of these words—Nez, fil, feu, cheval, bijou, ciel.

7. Give the French for these words-Eyes, mouth, sugar, knife, fork, Englishman, voice.

8. Put these numbers into French-40, 82, 95, 100, 1st, 2nd, 20th.

9. Write this date in French-Tuesday, March 5th, 1878.

1. Give the names (and endings if you can) of the seven tenses of French verbs which never change their termination. Which conjugation has the greatest number of irregular verbs? 2. What adjectives are generally used before the noun in French? Give examples.

3. In what cases do you use c'est and ce sont? Give examples. 4. With what pronouns do you conjugate pronomial verbs; which auxiliary do they always take?

5. Translate-Un jour un Rat de ville invita à dîner un Rat de campagne qu'il voulait éblouir de son luxe. Le festin, servi sur un tapis de Turquie, fut somptueux: pâté de volaille, pâté de gibier, fromage, noix et noisettes, rien ne manqua au régal. Nos deux amis se mirent joyeusement à table, et, avec mille gais propos, ils faisaient honneur à toutes ces bonnes choses, lorsqu'ils entendirent du bruit à la porte de la chambre. Le Rat de ville décampe, son camarade le suit.

1. Reading from French reading-book, with questions on plural of nouns, feminine of adjectives, principal parts of verbs, &c.

2. Oral translation of these sentences, placed on blackboard, taken from conversational exercises-What day of the month is to-day? (Tuesday, the 5th February.) What o'clock is it? It is five minutes past ten. Which is the way to the railway station? To the left of the church. Good morning, sir. How do you do? I thank you, I am very well. Take your pen, ink, and paper, and write this dictation.

3. Dictation, from reading-book-A ce spectacle, le peuple fut saise d'admiration, et l'empereur, qui était présent, ayant fait venir Androclès, lui demanda pourquoi le lion l'avait épargné.

Le neige tombait á gros flocons et couvrait le pavé de la cour d'un beau tapis blanc.

V.-German.

1. Give the imperfect simple future of sein and haben; also the pluperfect of sein and werden.

2. State the difference between a regular (weak) and an irregular (strong) verb, and give the present, indefinite, and imperfect of lieben.

3. Decline fully the definite article for all three genders.
4. Decline the singular of Sohn Vater.

5. Give the nominative plural of der Mensch, der Garten, and das Land.

6. Put these words into German, and state the gender: King, wine, house, horse, flower, wing, rose.

7. Translate these sentences, and give an answer to them in German if you can :—

(a) Was haben Sie?

(b) Wo ist Ihr Hut?

(c) Wer ist dieser junge Mann?

(d) Kennen Sie diese Soldaten ?
(e) Wie viel Uhr ist es ?

(f) Wir loben die Tugend jenes Mannes.

(g) Ich gebe dem Knaben das Brod.

8. Translate into German :

(a) We have no time to spare.

(b) Have courage.

(c) God is everywhere.

(d) I have a rose.

2nd Stage.

1. Translate into English :

Ein Bauer brachte eines Tages einen Korb voll Birnen in das Schloss eines vornehmen Herrn. Auf der Stiege fand er zwei Affen, welche wie die Kinder gekleidet waren. Ihre Kleider waren sehr schön and mit Gold gestickt; sie hatten auch einen Kleinen Degen an der Seite and einen Hut auf dem Kopfe. Diese drolligen Thiere warfen sich auf den Korb des Bauers, der seinen Hut abnahm und sich einen grossen Theil seiner Birnen nehmen liess.

2. Parse brachte, warfen, and give the imperfect and past participles of the same verbs.

3. Give the present indicative and imperfect of fallen, müssen, wissen.

4. Decline fully, singular and plural, das Schloss and die Stiege.

5. Compare gross and gut.

6. Give the two plurals of Das Band, with their respective meanings.

7. Give the German of the following:

(a) Bring me some bread and butter.

(b) I have eaten enough.

(c) What time is it? It is a quarter past four.

(d) Good morning, sir. How do you do?

(e) Very well, I thank you.

(f) Do me the pleasure?

(g) I am much obliged to you.

8. Translate the following into German :-
(a) How long have you learnt German !
(b) Three years and a half.

(c) At what time do you rise?

(d) A good book is a good friend.
(e) Come out!

(f) Alexander was the son of Philip.
(g) Go into the house.

3rd Stage.

1. Translate into English :

Der Prinz wollte den Unterschied zwischen Befehl und Gesetz nicht verstehen und selbst das Recht haben, das Urtheil des Gerichtes aufzuheben. Er beharrte auf seinem Verlangen, wurde ungeberdig, schimpfte und drohte. "Halt!" rief der Lord-Präsident; "Sie sind strafbar, Prinz, weil Sie sich vergangen haben. Ich stehe hier im Namen des Gesetzes und an der Stelle des Königs, ihres Vaters. In beiden Rücksichten sind Sie mir unbedingten Gehorsam schuldig, Prinz, ich befehle Ihnen demnach, von Ihrem Vorhaben abzustehen und Ihren künftigen Unterthanen ein besseres Beispiel der Ehrfurcht vor dem Gesetze zu geben. Jetzt aber werden Sie, wegen Verletzung dieser schuldigen Ehrfurcht, sich sofort in Gefangenschaft begeben und so lange darin verbleiben, bis der König Ihnen seinen höchsten Willen kund thun wird."

2. Parse Wollte, aufzuheben, rief, vergangen, befelhe, in the above extract.

3. Write out in full the present indicative of können, abreisen, entlaufen; the imperfect of ausgehen and Dank sagen, with the past participle of all five verbs.

4. Decline fully, singular and plural—

5. Decline ich and ihr.

6. Give three prepositions which govern both dative and accusative, and state when they govern the one and when the other.

7. State the gender of the following: Kind, Liebling, Diamant.

8. Give also the twofold meanings of übersetzen, with an example of each.

9. Translate into German :—

(a) Riches do not make happy.
(b) She has neglected her duties.

(c) Hear my opinion.

(d) Who has understanding possesses a great treasure.

The sooner you come the better.

1. Give the names of the three forms under which all matter may be included, with a definition and an example of each.

2. What do you mean by compression? What substances are the most compressible? Which least so?

6. What is a unit of length and a unit of time?

7. What do you mean by space of three dimensions, and how is it measured?

1. When a cricket ball is driven from a bat why does it stop? 2. Why is the current strongest in the middle of a river? 3. When the velocity is constantly changing what is the time measured by ?

4. What is force? How can a force be represented by a straight line?

5. Describe three forces acting at equal distances from each other on a point.

6. Describe the forces acting upon a cannon ball driven from a cannon, and those acting upon a ladder leaning against a wall. 7. What is the parallelogram of forces?

8. If three forces act on a point will they keep it in equilibrium?

9. Describe the triangle of forces. What is its converse?

1. Divide the mechanical powers into primary and secondary, stating which of the latter are derived from the former.

2. Draw three diagrams to illustrate the three different kinds of levers marking W. F. and P. Give two examples of the practical use of each kind.

3. If you wanted to raise a weight, too heavy to be lifted, by means of pulleys, what arrangement would you use, and why? 4. In what two ways can you increase the power of a screw? What limit is there to increasing the fineness of the thread? 5. Why is it easier to roll a weight up an inclined plane than to lift it a perpendicular height?

6. A horse draws a cart loaded with a ton of coals up a hill which rises one foot in ten. How much heavier will the load

be than if it was being drawn on level ground.

7. Under which of the simple mechanical powers are these implements to be classed-chisel, scissors, knife, plough, poker, windlass, spade?
