THE AUSTRALASIAN COLONIES.

AUSTRALIA.

Australia is a compact mass of land, lying between lat. 10° and 39° S., and long. 113° and 154° E., having the Indian Ocean on the N. and W., the Pacific on the E., and the Southern Ocean on the S., and, though entirely surrounded by water, it is termed a continent. It is 2,500 miles long from E. to W. on the parallel of 25° S., and 2,000 miles in extreme breadth from N. to S. The area is 2,944,628 square miles, and the coast line about 8,000 miles. Australia is divided into the following five colonies, viz. :— New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia. The population is 2,714,000. The area of all the Australasian Colonies (exclusive Fiji) is 3,161,389 square miles, and the estimated population, 3,440,000.

NEW SOUTH WALES.

New South Wales is bounded on the North by Queensland, on the West by South Australia, on the South by Victoria, and on the East by the Pacific Ocean. The extreme latitudes are 28° 10′ and 37° 20′ S., and the extreme longitudes 141° and 153° 40' E. It contains an area of 310,700 square miles, and a population of 1,000,000. Its metropolis is Sydney, and the other chief towns are-Newcastle, Maitland, Bathurst, Goulburn, Albury and Parramatta.

QUEENSLAND.

Queensland forms the North-Eastern portion of the Australian Continent. It lies between lat. 29° and 10° 45′ S., and long. 138° and 153° 30′ E. The Pacific, Torres Straits, and Gulf of Carpentaria form the Northern boundary; the Southern boundary is formed by New South Wales and South Australia; on the West it is bounded by South Australia, and on the East by the Pacific Ocean. It contains an area of 668,497 square miles, with a population of 340,000. Brisbane is the metropolis, and the other chief towns are-Ipswich, Rockhampton, Gympie, Townsville, and Maryborough.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

South Australia embraces the whole central portion of the Continent. From the Great Bight to lat. 26° S. it lies between long. 129° to 141° E., and from lat. 26° S. to the Gulf of Carpentaria, between long. 129° to 138° E. It is thus bounded on the North and South by the Ocean, on the West by Western Australia, and on the East by Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria. It contains an area of 903,690 square miles, and a population of 325,000. Its metropolis is Adelaide, and the other principal towns are-Port Adelaide, Glenelg, Kooringa, Mount Gambier, and Kapunda.

VICTORIA.

Victoria is the smallest division of Australia, and forms the extreme S.E. part of the Continent. It extends from lat. 34° to 39° S., and from long. 141° to 150° E. It is bounded on the North by the river Murray, which divides it from New South Wales, on the East by the Pacific, on the South by Bass' Straits, and on the West by the meridian of 141° E., which divides it from South Australia. It contains an area of 87,884 square miles, and a population of 1,012,000. Melbourne is its metropolis, and the other chief towns are-Ballarat, Sandhurst, Geelong, Stawell, Clunes, Echuca, Warrnambool, Maryborough, Kyneton, Hamilton, Ararat, and Beechworth.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA.

Western Australia is formed by that portion of the continent situated to the West of long. 129° E., which divides it from South Australia; on all the other sides it is bounded by the ocean. It lies between lat. 13° 44′ and 35° S., and long. 129° to 113° E. It contains an area of about 1,060,000 square miles, and a population of 37,000. Perth is the metropolis, and the other chief towns are - Fremantle, York, Albany, and Geraldton.
