TASMANIA.

Tasmania is an island situated south of the eastern part of Australia, from which it is separated by Bass' Strait, 150 miles wide. It lies between lat. 40° 44′ and 43° 39′ S., and long. 144° 38′ and 148° 24' E. It contains an area of 24,330 square miles, or 26,375 square miles including the other islands belonging to the colony. The total population is 136,000. Hobart is the capital, and Launceston is the chief town in the north of the island; the other principal towns are-Beaconsfield, Longford, Westbury, and New Norfolk.

NEW ZEALAND.

New Zealand consists of a group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean, lying between lat. 34° 12′ and 47° 20′ S., and extending diagonally between the extreme long. of 166° 30′ and 178° 40′ E. The two principal islands are the North Island and the South or Middle Island, and a third off the south coast of the South Island is called Stewart Island; besides these there are the Chatham and Auckland Islands, and other groups belonging to the colony. The North Island is divided from the Middle or South by Cook's Strait, and the South Island from Stewart's by Foveaux Strait. The area of the whole group is about 104,403 square miles. The total population is 590,000, including about 45,000 Maoris. The North Island is divided into four provincial districts, viz. :-Auckland, Taranaki, Hawke's Bay, and Wellington. The South Island has five provincial districts-Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago (with Southland), and Westland. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and the seat of Government; Auckland was the former capital, and the other chief towns on the North Island are-Napier, Thames, Wanganui, and New Plymouth. The principal towns on the South or Middle Island are- -Dunedin, Christchurch, Nelson, Oamaru, Invercargill, Lyttelton, Timaru, and Hokitika,

FIJI.

The Fiji Islands, in the Pacific Ocean, extend from lat. 16° to 21° S., and from long. 177° E. to 178° W. There are 200 islands in the group, about 80 of which are inhabited. The largest islands are-Viti Levu on the Western side, and Vanua Levu on the Northern side of the group. The seat of Government is at Suva on Viti Levu; the former capital was Levuka, on the island of Ovalau. The white population of this Crown-colony is about 2,500, and the native population 115,000. The principal districts are-Taviuni, Rewa, Navua, and Ba.

NEW GUINEA.

New Guinea lies wholly to the south of the equator, extending between lat. 0° 22′ and 10° 42′ S., and between long. 130° 50′ and 150° 50′ E. Its extreme length is 1,490 miles, and its greatest breadth about 410 miles. Its area is about 300,000 square miles. Port Moresby, on the S.E. shore of the large Papuan Gulf, is the principal port.

SAMOA.

The Samoa or Navigators Islands are situated between lat. 13° 13′ and 14° 30′ S., and long. 168° and 173° W. They consist of two groups, the eastern containing four islands, and the western thirteen; the largest island is Savaii, or Salovohi, which is 120 miles in circuit. The finest island is Upolu, on which is Apia, the chief town of the group. The native population is reckoned at about 35,000.

TONGA.

The Friendly or Tonga Islands lie 200 miles E. of the Fiji Group, between lat. 13° and 23° S., and long. 173° to 176° W. They consist of three separate groups, comprising in all about 120 islands, of which about 40 are inhabited by a population of about 30,000. Tonga, or Tongatabu, is the largest island.
