THE RED LETTER SHAKESPEARE

EDITED BY EDMUND K. CHAMBERS, M.A.

This edition aims at being at once scholarly, dainty, and popular.

The Editor, MR. EDMUND K. CHAMBERS, whose excellence as a writer is matched by his brilliant reputation as a student of dramatic literature, has prepared the text of each volume, adding such brief foot-notes as are needed to explain words and phrases that have dropped out of current use since Shakespeare's day. He contributes to each volume a short appreciation, embodying the latest views of Shakespearean scholarship and criticism in a manner that will prove interesting and suggestive to the general reader.

The volumes are printed with the greatest care from a beautiful Caslon type, and present three distinctive features:-(1) The format, chosen after much consideration, is novel, and has been generally recognized as graceful as well as convenient. (2) Red ink is employed for the names of the characters throughout the plays. (3) These names are printed in full, not abbreviated as is usually the case. Thus the reader is able easily to distinguish between the speakers, and cannot be displeased by finding the handsome Bassanio disguised as Bass., or dainty Ariel vulgarized as Ari.

The volumes are issued in two forms, cloth bound and leather bound respectively. The decorations of the cover, as well as the title-page, end-papers, and other ornamentation, including a series of initial letters, have been specially designed for this edition by Mr. Talwin Morris. In all material respects this edition is intended to be a model of modern book production. The price of each volume is:

The Warwick Library of English Literature

General Editor-Professor C. H. HERFORD, Litt.D.

Each volume of this Library deals with the development in English literature of some special literary form, which is illustrated by a series of representative specimens, slightly annotated, and preceded by a critical and analytical introduction. The volumes form a choice comparative review of English literary development. In crown 8vo volumes, cloth, price 35. 6d. each. English Tales in Verse. Edited by C. H. HERFORD, M.A.

“His own essay, on 'The Tale in Verse ', is full of knowledge and sensitive appreciation: compressed and allusive as much of it is, there is no reference in it that has not been considered and tested by the author; though it takes a wide range in its survey, nothing is hurried."

bookman. English Pastorals. Edited by EDMUND K. CHAMBERS, M.A.

““The idea of such a series has niuch to recommend it, and it is well carried out in this comely and attractive volume. In his introduction Mr. Chambers writes of the history and characteristics of the Pastoral with learning, insight, and sympathy."- The Times. English Literary Criticism. Edited by C. E. VAUGHAN, M.A.

“Both in his selection and his introduction Professor Vaughan shows a very adequate knowledge and a sound and independent judgment. aim was not to pick the purple patches of critical literature, but to exhibit substantial examples of the few great critics who represent stages of development in the craft of criticism. National Observer. English Essays. Edited by J. H. LOBBAN, M.A.

“It is refreshing to find an editor who can write with just appreciation and without exaggerated praise. Mr. Lobban has accomplished his task with care and good judgment, the consequence is that he writes with a certain fulness, and seldom fails to interest his reader.' - The Journal of Education. English Lyric Poetry (1500-1700 A.D.). Edited by FRED

ERIC IVES CARPENTER, M.A. “This excellent addition to an excellent series deserves notice and commendation. The notes, literary and biographical, are notable for conciseness. The introduction is also a sound piece of criticism, tracing with great clearness the connection between the lyrical impulse and performance of particular periods and the national history.”- The Spectator. English Masques. Edited by H. A. EVANS, M.A., Balliol

College, Oxford. "His introduction is adequate and pleasantly written, and his notes unobtrusive. Altogether he has produced a thoroughly useful little book which all students of dramatic literature will be glad to place on their shelves.' -Guardian, English Satires. Edited by OLIPHANT SMEATON, M.A.

"The book is scholarly and has all the attractions of its kind. The student who likes to be carried swiftly from century to century, from one old friend to another, will find here what he

He will be able to turn with all the pleasures of contrast from Chaucer to Dryden, from Swift to Browning, or from Sydney Smith to George Canning or Thackeray."-LiteraEnglish Historians. Edited by A. J. GRANT, M.A.
