These guides are intended to give the public just what they want, that is to say, not merely a History of the Town they may be visiting, but a real guide to the district, so that those who have but a short time to stay can make the best of their opportunities in seeing the town and the surrounding country, and enjoy themselves thoroughly while in the neighbourhood.

The Editor has directed his attention to the things of to-day rather than the events of yesterday, and it is intended to keep the Series well up-to-date, and to make it as useful as possible.

Each volume will be illustrated with Maps and numerous half-tone Illustrations. In preparation.

ARIA. WOMAN AND THE MOTOR CAR.

Mrs. ARIA.

By

Fully Illustrated. With moveable Diagram of a Motor Car. 8vo, Cloth, Gilt Top. In box, 10s 6d net.

The Author's aim in writing "Woman and the Motor Car" has been to produce a book that every woman motorist will wish to keep by her as a kind of guide, philosopher, and friend.

Not only does she give her own authoritative views, but, having taken counsel with several ladies whose names are household words in the motoring world, she adds also their expert suggestions-so that the practical and the becoming are exhaustively considered.

An entirely novel feature of the book is a model of a motor car, which can be opened, showing all the works and various details one after the other, thus giving a useful series of lessons on the interior mechanism of the car which could not be obtained in any other manner.

Descriptions of some of the chief foreign clearing houses are included in this succinct and valuable book, which has the double merit of proceeding from a recognized authority and of being the first comprehensive treatment of the subject in a single volume.

DURAND. CYRUS, THE

GREAT KING. AN

HISTORICAL ROMANCE. By SIR EDWARD DURAND, Bart., C.B. 395 pages, 8vo, Cloth, gilt top, silk marker,

IOS 6d net.

In this important literary work Sir Edward Durand has imagined the life of that great Persian who led his warriors throughout the long period of perpetual wars and conquests which culminated in the Siege and Fall of Babylon. The story, which is in the form of a poem, ends with the death of Cyrus in the mountains of Dena, whither he is carried when mortally wounded by the Queen of the Saca tribes, against whom he fights his last battle.

Sir Edward Durand (who is the elder brother of the distinguished Ambassador at Washington, Sir Mortimer Durand) travelled in Persia, Central Asia, and other Eastern lands during his time of service, and would seem to have imbibed something of the romance of the East, the freedom and the breath of large spaces, which we feel reflected in the picture of the past which he puts before us.
