THE following work, originally compiled, at my suggestion, by the late Dr Snowball, has been unconditionally transferred to me by his Executors; and I have therefore not hesitated to re-write certain portions of it, and to make such alterations throughout as I conceived necessary. At the end of each chapter I have added a series of easy questions for the exercise of the Student. I have also carefully looked through all the papers of the University Examinations for the last ten years; and have printed a Collection of the best of the Problems, with their Solutions, as well as a large number of others with Answers only.

I am disposed to hope that the work, as it now appears, will be found suited to the wants, not only of University Students, but also of many others who require a short course of Mechanics and Hydrostatics, and especially of the Candidates at our Middle-Class Examinations.
