Conquest of England; from Wace's Poem of the "Roman de

Rou," translated into English Rhyme by Sir A. MALET, with the FrancoNorman text, and the notes of various editors, illustrated by numerous photographs from the Tapestry of Bayeux, 4to. hf. bound, gilt top, edges uncut, (pub. 2. 28)

£1. 4s

This extract from the celebrated metrical chronicle, “Le Roman de Rou," commences with thefillness of Edward the Confessor, and details with scrupulous fidelity "the minutest particulars which brought on, signalised, and followed the expedition of William the Conqueror. Wace's details of the Battle of Hastings are singularly confirmed by the Saxon Chroniclers; and thus, though he has written in a poetical form, his work may be fairly admitted to be invested with the dignity of history,"

Chronicle of Heres, from the begynnynge of the Worlde, wherein ye shal fynde the names of all the Kynges of Englande, of the Mayres and Shyriffes of the Cytie of London, and briefly of many noble Actes done in & sens the reigne of K. Henry IV. 12mo. hf. bound 7s 6d The original of this scarce old Chronicle having come into the hands of the publishers, they considered it curious enough to merit a reprint. They accordingly prepared a facsimile impression, which is limited to 100 copies.

The compiler was evidently a citizen of London, and he has noted many occurrences of interest in the history of the City as well as of the Kingdom. For some years previous to the period of publication (1552), the remarks are evidently those of an eye-witness. Among other matters will be found the following:Discovery of the Art of Printing. Campaigns in Scotland and France.

Curious Ordinances on the Sale of Fish.
Burning of a great part of Norwich.

Visit to England of Christerne, King of Denmark.
Execution of the Holy Maid of Kent.

Collection for the Poor.

was carried to London by land in carts.
Execution of Egerton and Harman for counterfeiting
the King's Great Seal.

At the end of the work is a curious appendix, entitled" The length, bredthe, and compasse of Englande, with the nombre of Paryshe Churches, Townes, Bishoprickes, and Shyres, Cities, and Castels; and also the Wayes leadynge to the most notable places and the dystaunce betwyxte the same."

THE THIRD SERIES commencing with the GREAT DEBATES on the REFORM BILLS of 1830-32, and comprising the whole Era of the Reformed Parliament, complete 1830-73. Reigns of William IV. and Victoria, 217 vols. newly half bound

£99.

When the early portion of this great work was issued at the beginning of the present century, its correctness was so apparent, that its reputation was at once established, and has since been so confirmed by experience, as to render unnecessary official reports of the Parliamentary Debates, and indeed for a long period, quotations from the work have been received in Public Debate with all the authority usually attached to official Documents. No more valuable series of works of reference, whether for the Member of Parliament or Public Institution, exists in the present day.

The PARLIAMENTARY HISTORY contains all that can be collected of the Legislative History of this country from the Conquest to the close of the XVIIIth Century (1803), 36 vols. The chief sources whence these Debates are derived are, the Constitutional History, 24 vols.; Sir Simond D'Ewes' Journal; Debates of the Commons in 1620 and 1621; Chandler and Timberland's Debates, 22 vols.; Grey's Debates of the Commons, 1667-94, 10 vols.; Almon's Debates, 24 vols.; Debrett's Debates, 63 vols.; The Hardwicke Papers; Debates in Parliament by Dr. Johnson, &c. &c.
