DEVOTEDNESS AND SERVICE.

5 His work my hoary age shall bless,
When youthful vigour is no more;
And my last hour of life confess
His love hath animating power.

Ye are not your own, for ye are

When all the faithful gather home,
A joyful company,

And ever where the Master is,
Shall His blest servants be.

6. 19.

TAKE my life, and let it be

Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;

Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

2 Take my hands, and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love;
Take my feet, and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee.

3 Take my voice, and let me sing,
Always, only, for my King;
Take my lips, and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee.

4 Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold;
Take my intellect, and use
Every power as Thou shalt choose.
5 Take my will, and make it Thine;
It shall be no longer mine;
Take my heart, it is Thine own;
It shall be Thy royal throne.
6 Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasured store;
Take myself, and I will be,
Ever, only, all for Thee.

word.-Ps. 119. 172.

HELP me, my God, to speak

True words to Thee each day;

True let my voice be when I praise,
And trustful when I pray.

Thy words are true to me,

Let mine to Thee be true;

The speech of my whole heart and soul,
However low and few.

True words of grief for sin,
Of longing to be free,

Of groaning for deliverance,
And likeness, Lord, to Thee.
True words of faith and hope,
Of godly joy and grief,
"Lord, I believe," O hear my cry,
"Help Thou my unbelief !"

Thy servant, Lord, to be!

The hardest toil to undertake
With joy at Thy command,
The meanest office to receive
With meekness at Thy hand!

2 With willing heart and longing eyes,
To watch before Thy gate,
Ready to run the weary race,
To bear the heavy weight;
No voice of thunder to expect,
But follow, calm and still,
For love can easily divine
The One Beloved's will.

3 Thus may I serve Thee, gracious Lord! Thus ever Thine alone,

My soul and body given to Thee,

The purchase Thou hast won.

Through evil or through good report,

Still keeping by Thy side,

By life or death, in this poor flesh,
Let Christ be magnified!

4 How happily the working days
In this dear service fly;
How rapidly the closing hour,
The time of rest, draws nigh!

John 13. 13.

EAR Lord and Master mine,

DThy happy servant see!

My Conqueror! with what joy Divine
Thy captive clings to Thee !

I love Thy yoke to wear,
To feel Thy gracious bands--
Sweetly restrained by Thy care,
And happy in Thy hands.

No bar would I remove,
No bond would I unbind:
Within the limits of Thy love
Full liberty I find.

I would not walk alone,
But still with Thee, my God:
At every step my blindness own,
And ask of Thee the road.

5 Dear Lord, and Master mine,
Still keep Thy servant true!
My Guardian and my Guide Divine,
Bring, bring Thy pilgrim through!

My lips shall utter praise,

1143 when Thou hast taught me

Thy statutes.-Ps. 119. 171. WHEREFORE, Lord, doth Thy

10 dear praise

But tremble on my tongue?
Why lack my lips sweet skill to raise
A full triumphant song?

2 How can this heart divinely glow,
So ready to transgress?

Thy broken law doth dull me so ;
My sins Thy praise oppress.

3 O make me, Lord, Thy statutes learn,
Keep in Thy ways my feet;
Then shall my lips divinely burn,
Then shall my songs be sweet.

4 Each sin I cast away shall make
My soul more strong to soar;
Each work I do for Thee shall wake
A strain divine the more.

5 My voice shall more delight Thine ear
The more I wait on Thee;

Thy service brings my soul more near
The angelic harmony.

6 O, wherefore swells so sweet above
The everlasting hymn?

Thy will they work, Thy law they love,
Those tuneful Seraphim.

7 O, when shall perfect holiness
Make this poor voice divine,

And all harmonious heaven confess
No sweeter song than mine?

to do?-Acts 9. 6.

FT when of God we ask

OF

For fuller, happier life,
He sets us some new task,
Involving care and strife:

Is this the boon for which we sought?
Has prayer new trouble on us brought?

3

4

This is indeed the boon Though strange to us it seems; We pierce the rock, and soon The blessing on us streams; For when we are the most athirst, Then the clear waters on us burst. We toil as in a field, Wherein, to us unknown, A treasure lies concealed, Which may be all our own; And shall we of the toil complain, That speedily will bring such gain? We dig the wells of life, And God the waters gives; We win our ways by strife, Then He within us lives; And only war could make us meet For peace so sacred and so sweet. T. T. LYNCH. 1855.

1145 Light is sown for the righteous

1

Ps. 97. 11.

ORD, give me light to do Thy work, For only, Lord, from Thee Can come the light by which these eyes The work of truth can see.

2 The way is narrow, often dark,

With lights and shadows strown, I wander oft, and think it Thine, When walking in my own.

3 Yet pleasant is the work for Thee,
And pleasant is the way,

But, Lord, the world is dark, and I
Am prone to go astray.

4 O send me light to do Thy work,
More light, more wisdom give;
Then shall I work Thy work indeed,
While on Thine earth I live.

5 The work is Thine, not mine, O Lord; It is Thy race we run;

Give light, and then shall all I do
Be well and truly done.

1151 Make haste to help me, O Lord

my salvation.-Ps. 38. 22.

10 not far from me, O my Strength,

Gwho all my times obey;

Take from me anything Thou wilt,
But go not Thou away-

And let the storm that does Thy work
Deal with me as it may.

2 On Thy compassion I repose
In weakness and distress;
I will not ask for greater ease,
Lest I should love Thee less;
O'tis a blessed thing for me

To need Thy tenderness!

3 Thy love has many a lighted path
No outward eye can trace;

And my heart sees Thee in the deep,
With darkness on its face,
And

[storm, communes with thee 'mid the As in a secret place.

4 When I am feeble as a child,

And flesh and heart give way,
Then on Thy everlasting strength
With passive trust I stay,

And the rough wind becomes a song,
The darkness shines like day.

5 There is no death for me to fear,
For Christ, my Lord, hath died;
There is no curse in this my pain,
For He was crucified;
And it is fellowship with Him

That keeps me near His side.

6 My heart is fixed, O God, my Strength, My heart is strong to bear;

I will be joyful in Thy love,
And peaceful in Thy care.
Deal with me for my Saviour's sake,
According to His prayer.

Its ends can never miss,

For men on earth no work can do
More angel-like than this.

Thou glorious will! ride on;
Faith's pilgrim-sons behind Thee take
The road that Thou hast gone.

To Him no chance is lost;

God's will is sweetest to him when
It triumphs at his cost.

1 W arise?

And where's our courage fled? Has restless sin and raging hell

Struck all our comforts dead?

2 Have we forgot the Almighty name
That formed the earth and sea?
And can an all-creating arm
Grow weary or decay?

3 Treasures of everlasting might
In our Jehovah dwell;

He gives the conquest to the weak,
And treads their foes to hell.

4 Mere mortal power shall fade and die,

And youthful vigour cease;

But we that wait upon the Lord
Shall feel our strength increase.

And taste the promised bliss,

Where perfect pleasure is.

1156 Unto the upright there ariseth

light in the darkness.-Ps. 112. 4.

1 COMETIMES a light surprises The Christian while he sings;

It is the Lord who rises

With healing in His wings.
When comforts are declining,
He grants the soul again
A season of clear shining,
To cheer it after rain.

2 In holy contemplation,

We sweetly then pursue
The theme of God's salvation,
And find it ever new.
Set free from present sorrow,
Wo cheerfully can say,
E'en let the unknown morrow
Bring with it what it may;
3 It can bring with it nothing

But He will bear us through;
Who gives the lilies clothing,
Will clothe His people too:
Beneath the spreading heavens,
No creature but is fed;
And He who feeds the ravens
Will give His children bread.

now; thou shalt know hereafter.
-John 13. 7.

1 MY Father, it is good for me
To trust and not to trace;
And wait with deep humility
For Thy revealing grace.

2 Lord! when Thy way is in the sea,
And strange to mortal sense,
I love Thee in the mystery,

I trust Thy providence.

3 I cannot see the secret things
In this my dark abode :

I may not reach with earthly wings
The heights and depths of God.

4 So faith and patience! wait awhile!-
Not doubting, not in fear;

For soon in heaven my Father's smile
Shall render all things clear.

5 Then shalt Thou end Time's short eclipse, Its short uncertain night;

Bring in the grand apocalypse:
Reveal the perfect Light."

and there

was a great calm.-Mark 4. 39. IERCE was the wild billow,

FIERCE

Dark was the night,

Oars laboured heavily,

Foam glimmered white;
Trembled the mariners,
Peril was nigh,

Then said the Lord our God,
Peace, it is I!

2 Ridge of the mountain wave,
Lower Thy crest;

Wail of the tempest-wind,

Be Thou at rest;

Peril can never be,

Sorrow must fly,

Where saith the Light of light, Peace, it is I!

3 Jesus, Deliverer,

Coine Thou to me;

Smooth Thou my voyaging
Over life's sea!

Thou, when the storm of death

Roars, sweeping by,

Whisper, O Truth of truth,

Peace, it is I!
