175 "Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

Imf HOW few receive, with cordial faith,

The tidings which we bring!

How few have seen the arm revealed

Of heaven's eternal King!

2 mf The Saviour comes! No outward pomp
Bespeaks His presence nigh;
No earthly beauty shines in Him
To draw the carnal eye.

3 mf Fair as a beauteous tender flower
Amidst the desert grows,

So, slighted by a rebel race,
The heavenly Saviour rose.

4

Rejected and despised of men,

Behold a Man of woe!

Grief was His close companion still
Through all His life below.

5 Yet all the griefs He felt were ours;
Ours were the woes He bore:

Pangs, not His own, His spotless soul pp With bitter anguish tore.

6p We held Him as condemned by Heaven,
An outcast from His God;

While for our sins He groaned, He bled,
Beneath His Father's rod.

"I am the good Shepherd: the good Shepherd giveth His life for the sheep."

Imf SOULS of men, why will ye scatter,

Like a crowd of frightened sheep? Foolish hearts, why will ye wander From a love so true and deep? 2mf Was there ever kindest shepherd

Half so gentle, half so sweet, As the Saviour, who would have us cres Come and gather round His feet?

3 "f There's a wideness in God's mercy,

Like the wideness of the sea;

There's a kindness in His justice,

Which is more than liberty.

5 mf For, the love of God is broader

Than the measures of man's mind;
And the heart of the Eternal
Is most wonderfully kind.

6 mf There is plentiful redemption
In the blood that has been shed;
There is joy for all the members
In the sorrows of the Head.

7 Pining souls, come nearer Jesus ;
And oh, come not doubting thus,
cres But with faith that trusts more bravely
His huge tenderness for us.

4p There is no place where earth's sorrows 8 f If our love were but more simple,

Are more felt than up in heaven;

There is no place where earth's failings
Have such kindly judgment given.

We should take Him at His word;
And our lives would be all sunshine
In the sweetness of our Lord. Amen

178 They shall look upon Me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him."

ImfGREAT God of Abram, hear our 3 mf Lord, put Thy law within their hearts

prayer,

Let Abram's seed Thy mercy share ;
Oh, may they now at length return,
And look on Him they pierced, and

mourn!

2 mf Remember Jacob's flock of old,

Bring home the wanderers to Thy fold; Remember too Thy promised word, "Israel at last shall seek the Lord."

WAPRINGTON.

And write it in their inward parts;
The veil of darkness rend in two,

Which hides Messiah from their view.
4cres Oh, haste the day, foretold so long,
When Jew and Greek, a glorious throng,
One house shall seek, one prayer shall

pour,

f And one Redeemer shall adore!

Amen.

"God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause His face to shine upon us."

I mf GOD of mercy, God of grace,
Show the brightness of Thy face;
Shine upon us, Saviour, shine,
Fill Thy Church with light divine;
cres And Thy saving health extend

Unto earth's remotest end.

2 f Let the people praise Thee, Lord;
Be by all that live adored;
Let the nations shout and sing

Glory to their Saviour King,
dim At Thy feet their tribute pay,
And Thy holy will obey.

3 ƒ Let the people praise Thee, Lord;
Earth shall then her fruits afford,
God to man His blessing give,
Man to God devoted live:

ff All below, and all above,

One in joy and light and love. Amen.

182 "Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee."

I mf O'ER those gloomy hills of darkness
Look, my soul; be still, and gaze;
All the promises do travail
With a glorious day of grace:
cres Blessèd jubilee!

Let thy glorious morning dawn.

2 mf Let the Indian, let the Negro,
Let the rude barbarian see
That divine and glorious conquest,
Once obtained on Calvary ;
cres Let the gospel

Loud resound from pole to pole.

3 mf Kingdoms wide that sit in darkness,
Let them have the glorious light;

cres And from eastern coast to western
May the morning chase the night;
And redemption,
Freely purchased, win the day.

4 f Fly abroad, eternal gospel,

Win and conquer, never cease;
May thy lasting wide dominions
Multiply and still increase;
ff May thy sceptre

Sway the enlightened world around.
Amen.
