PREFACE.

AFTER a literary existence of FORTY-FIVE YEARS, during which period the successive Conductors of this periodical have enjoyed the confidence of the main bulk of the Sunday School community, as an independent organ and channel of information, assisted as they have been by the most eminent supporters of the Sunday School cause, it would seem quite superfluous, in the closing month of the year, to commend its old-established claims to attention. A glance over the annexed Index must at once convince every Subscriber, that for variety and intelligence, the staff of contributors to its pages have done justice to its lengthened reputation.

Such is the "SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS' MAGAZINE." Has it not kept pace with the genius of the times?

That the "Old Magazine" may still be improved is no less certain, than that the Sunday School system is capable of higher efforts and greater expansion. May the great Head of the church direct all our efforts in the right way, whether schools or literature, so that we succeed in redeeming lost souls to God; and may we all, in our humble day and generation, be made instruments in his divine hands, through the gospel of his dear Son, to ameliorate the wretchedness of a lost world. This grand object will be chiefly attained through the blessings of a sound Christian education in spirit and in truth.
