Present Ideals of Education as shown by Courses of Study.

The evolution of High School Curricula in Massachusetts was given on a foregoing page. For our purpose it will suffice to show what their present status is in representative states instead of tracing their developert, ir all sections. Since aims and ideals of schools always fint expression in courses of study, an examination of these will show what is considered the function of High Schools.

Course recomended by State Supt. Skinrer to be adopted by eachigh school or academy in the state to enable their graduates to be licensed in or employed by any city having a superintendent of schools to teach in the public school thereof.

A three years course of study in a High School, in order to receive the approval of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, as required by chapter 1031 of the Laws of 1805 entitled "An act to encourage and promote the professional training of teachers," should include the following as a minimum requirement.

1. English, three years, or 300 recitations. The English course should inclule Grammar, Rhetoric, Literature, and Corposition. The work in Literature shoul cover at least the ground required for admission to college by the Association of Schools and Colleges of the Middle States and Maryland.

2. Mathematics, three years or 300 recitations. The rathenatical course should include Algebra to the end of Quadratic

Equations, Plane Geometry, and a review of Arithmetic.

3. A foreign language, Latin, French, or Geman, three years or 300 recitations. The course should include at least the granmar of the language and the translation at sight or simple

rose and poetry into idiomatic English.

4. History and civics, three years or 200 recitations. The course is to include English, Greek, and Roman History, with the intensive study of Civics and some special period of

American History.

5. Physiology and Zoology, one year or 100 recitations.

6. Geography, Physical and Mathematical, one year or l ́0 recitations.

7. Vocal music, three years or 100 recitatiors. The course should include vocal culture (in class ), sight-singing from the staff, and the common technical tems used in vocal music.
