Sir - The first edition of this work was, by per mission, inscribed to the patriotic De Witt Clinton, deceased, then Governor of this State, in words fol lowing: Having a knowledge of your efl'orts and zeal in promoting the useful arts and sciences - and at a time when they are needful for the continuance and prosperity of free governments when pretension: to political good, are too Often substituted for real patriotism; I venture to inscribe to you this work, introductory to the different systems of arithmetic, for perusal and approbation.
