ATLANTIS, or ATALANTIS, an Island mentioned in Plato's Timæus as situated beyond the Pillars of Hercules, and surpassing in extent Africa and Asia taken together, and which, according to the above account, was swallowed up by a prodigious earthquake. Some are disposed to treat all this as an idle invention, some that it related to America, whilst others strongly support the opinion that the island Atlantis at one time actually existed, and that, by some fatal catastrophe, it now forms the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.-1635.
