Must Avoid Duplicating England's Humiliation

No problem, faced by the American nation today, is greater than that presented by the tendency to yield to labor consideration, rights and opportunity not accorded to other citizenship. The whole trend of this movement, observable in bills passed by and under consideration in the congress of the United States and in state legislatures, is to force business to the wall. Such things as authorizing the boycott and picketting, fixing a minimum wage, eight-hour legislation, trial by jury for contempt, abridging the power of courts of equity in injunction and the like are the forerunner of Socialism. Every believer in a government for the individual; every man who believes that this is and should be a land of opportunity; ought to set his face against these things.

AS THE AMERICAN EMPLOYER goes to press, the great state of Ohio is voting on a new constitution, the suggested changes embodying many of the dangerous proposals of the Socialistic dreamers and the blatant leaders, socalled, of labor. It is probable that many of these changes will be authorized by the people of Ohio. If they are not, it will not be the fault of the selfseeking, vote-catching politicians, who have urged their adoption. It is probable that after they are passed those injured by them will fully realize the harm that has been done and seek to modify that harm, in part, by electing men to office who will refuse to pass harmful laws based on these constitutional author

izations.

England is suffering from just that sort of ill-advised legislation that this country is now playing with. In 1906, that country passed the Trades Dispures Acts, some of the provisions of which are that an act done in pursuance of an agreement or combination by two or more people shall, if done in furtherance of a trade dispute, not be actionable unless it would be actionable if done without combination; that it shall be lawful for several persons in furtherance of a trade dispute to attend at or near a place of business to "peacefully" persuade persons to abstain from working; that an act done in contemplation
