O DEATH since General Sherman's has occasioned such general and genuine sorrow throughout the country, and especially in Iowa, as that of Governor Kirkwood, which occured at his home in Iowa City, at one o'clock in the afternoon of September 1st. his wife's birthday.

In the number for October, 1873, of the ANNALS OF IOWA (the name of the Historical Society's quarterly before the issue of the HISTORICAL RECORD), a short sketch of Governor Kirkwood's life appeared -- an example of the futility of premortuary biography --for much of his most important public career was yet to come, as was forecast in that sketch. He has since been Governor of Iowa for the third time-the only instance in our State where the same person has been elected to this office for a third term - United States Senator, and Secretary of the Interior in two Cabinets Garfield's and Arthur's.
