[spot,

2 Just as I am-and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot;
To Thee, whose blood can cleanse cach
O Lamb of God, I come!

3 Just as I am-though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings within, and fears without,
O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am-poor, wretched, blind,
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need, in Thee to find,

O Lamb of God, I come!

5 Just as I am--Thou wilt receive, Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve, Because Thy promise I believe,

O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am-Thy love unknown
Has broken every barrier down;
Now, to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
Ó Lamb of God, I come!

2 Not the labour of my hands
Can fulfil Thy law's demands:
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears for ever flow,
All for sin could not atone:
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
3 Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Black, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Saviour, or I die!

4 While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyelids close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment-throne,
Rock of ages! shelter me!
Let me hide myself in Thee!

He went on his way rejoicing.
Acts. viii. 39.

HAPPY day, that fixed my choice

On Thee, my Saviour, and my God!
Well may this glowing heart rejoice,
And tell its raptures all abroad.

2 O happy bond that seals my vows
To Him who merits all my love!
Let cheerful anthems fill His house,
While to that sacred shrine I move.

3 'Tis done; the great transaction's done,
I am my Lord's, and He is mine;
He drew me, and I followed on,
Glad to confess the voice divine.

4 Now rest, my long-divided heart;
Fixed on this blissful centre, rest;
With ashes who would grudge to part,
When called on angels' bread to feast?

5 High heaven, that heard the solemn vow,
That vow renewed shall daily hear;
Till in life's latest hour I bow,
And bless in death a bond so dear.

I will sing unto Thy name.
Rom. xv. 9.

HERE is a name I love to hear,

Lead me to the Rock that is higher 1 Hlove to speak its worth;

than I.-Ps. lxi. 2.

ROCK of ages, cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in Thee!

Let the water and the blood,

From Thy wounded side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure;

Cleanse me from its guilt and power.

30

It sounds like music in mine ear,
The sweetest name on earth.

2 It tells me of a Saviour's love,
Who died to set me free;
It tells me of His precious blood,
The sinner's perfect plea.

THE CALL ACCEPTED AND REJOICED IN.

3 It tells me of a Father's smile

Beaming upon His child;

It cheers me through this little while,

Through desert, waste, and wild.

4 Jesus, the name I love so well,

The name I love to hear;

No saint on earth its worth can tell,
No heart conceive how dear.

5 This name shall shed its fragrance still Along this thorny road;

Shall sweetly smooth the rugged hill
That leads me up to God.

6 And there, with all the blood-bought

From sin and sorrow free.

I'll sing the new eternal song

Of Jesus' love to me.

Lord, I have loved the habitation

of Thy house.-Ps. xxvi. 8.

LOVE Thy kingdom, Lord,
The house of Thine abode;
The Church our blest Redeemer saved,
With His own precious blood.

2 I love Thy Church, O God!
Her walls before Thee stand,
Dear as the apple of Thine eye,
And graven on Thy hand.

3 For her my tears shall fall;

For her my prayers ascend;
To her my cares and toils be given,
Till toils and cares shall end.

4 Beyond my highest joy

I prize her heavenly ways,

Her sweet communion, solemn vows,
Her hymns of love and praise.

5 Sure as Thy truth shall last,
To Zion shall be given

The brightest glories earth can yield,
And brighter bliss of he

Save us, O Lord, our God.
Ps. cvi. 47.

10 MY Saviour, hear me,

Draw me close to Thee; Thou hast paid my ransom, Thou hast died for me; Now by simple faith I claim Pardon through Thy gracious name; Thou, my Ark of safety,

Let me fly to Thee.

2 0 my Saviour, bless me!
Bless me while I pray;
Grant Thy grace to help me,
Take my sins away;
I believe Thy promise, Lord,
I will trust Thy holy word;"
Thou my soul's Redeemer,
Bless me while I pray.

3 0 my Saviour, love me!

Make me all Thine own;
Leave me not to wander

In this world alone:

Bless my way with light divine,
Let Thy glory round me shine;
Thou, my Rock, my Refuge,
Make me all Thine own.

4 0 my Saviour, guard me!
Keep me evermore;
Bless me, love me, guide me,
Till my work is o'er:

May I then, with glad surprise,
Chant Thy praise beyond the skies;
There with Thee, my Saviour,
Dwell for evermore.

Behold the Lamb of God.
John i. 29.

LAMB of God most lowly!
All free from spot and stain,
Oh, help us now to seek Thee,
And sing Thy praise again.

20 Lamb of God most holy!

So great and yet so meek,
May we, when pride allures us,
Thy lowly spirit seek.

3 O Lamb of God most gentle !
And yet so good and true,
May we when passion tempts us,
Thy gentleness pursue.

4 O Lamb of God most lovely!

To Thee our faith would flee; Reveal to us Thy beauty, And win our hearts to Thee. W. P. BALFERN. 1875.

2 Though, like the wanderer,
The sun gone down,
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I'd be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,-
Nearer to Thee.

3 There let the way appear,
Steps unto heaven;
All that Thou sendest me
In mercy given;
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to Thee,-
Nearer to Thee.

4 Then with my waking thoughts
Bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs
Bethels I'll raise;
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,-
Nearer to Thee.

5 And when on joyful wing
Cleaving the sky,

Sun, moon, and stars forgot,
Upwards I fly,

Still all my song shall be,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,-
Nearer to Thee.

Lord, increase our faith.
Luke xvii. 5.

1 MY faith looks up to Thee,

2

Thou Lamb of Calvary,"
Saviour divine!

Now hear me while I pray,
Take all my guilt away,
Oh, may I from this day

Be wholly Thine.

May Thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart,
My zeal inspire:

As Thou hast died for me,
Oh, may my love to Thee
Pure, warm, and changeless be,
A living fire.

3 While life's dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be Thou my Guide;
Bid darkness turn to day,
Wipe sorrow's tears away,
Nor let me ever stray
From Thee aside.

4 When ends life's transient dream When death's cold sullen stream Shall o'er me roll,

Blest Saviour, then in love,
Fear and distrust remove;

Oh, bear me safe above,

A ransomed soul!

And keep me for ever,
Safe, safe in the fold:

More holy, dear Saviour,
More faithful to Thee."

2 More humble in spirit,

More fervent in prayer,
More cheerful and willing
My trials to bear:
More earnest in labour
Oh, help me to be,
More holy, dear Saviour,
More faithful to Thee."
3 Come, blessed Redeemer,
Now dwell in my heart:
My hope and my comfort
For ever Thou art;
In all my temptations,
Oh, help me to be
More holy, dear Saviour,
More faithful to Thee.

[ocr errors]

Thy gentle voice I hear! It speaks from out the pages Of Thine own Book divine; It comes all down the ages, To weary hearts like mine. 2 O Jesus! meek and lowly, Of comforters the best; O Jesus! pure and holy,

To me Thou offer'st rest. Rest from all mental anguish, The rest of sin forgiven, Rest when I fail and languish, The perfect rest of heaven. 3 O Jesus! meek and lowly, I look to Thee alone; O Jesus! pure and holy, To Thee for rest I come; I trust and so believe Thee, I seek Thy blessed face; Receive me, oh, receive me, Within Thy kind embrace!

Unto you who believe, He is 129

precious.-1 Pet. ii. 7.

NEED Thee, precious Jesus!
For I am full of sin;

My soul is dark and guilty,
My heart is dead within;

I need the cleansing fountain,
Where I can always flee,

The blood of Christ most precious,
The sinner's perfect plea.

2 I need Thee, blessed Jesus!
For I am very poor;

A stranger and a pilgrim,
I have no earthly store;
I need the love of Jesus,

To cheer me on my way,
To guide my doubting footsteps,
To be my strength and stay.
3 I need Thee, blessed Jesus!
I need a friend like Thee;
A friend to soothe my sorrows,
A friend to care for me;
I need the heart of Jesus

To feel each anxious care,
To tell my every want to,
And all my sorrows share.
4 I need Thee, blessed Jesus!

And hope to see Thee soon, Encircled with the rainbow, And seated on Thy throne;

There, with Thy blood-bought children,
My joy shall ever be,

To sing Thy praise, Lord Jesus,
To gaze, my Lord, on Thee.

Pray to thy Father who is in secret,
Matt. vi. 6.

10 when the morning shineth,
Go when the noon is bright,

Go when the eve declineth,
Go in the hush of night;
Go with pure mind and feeling,
Fling every fear away,
And in thy chamber kneeling,
Do thou in secret pray.

2 Remember all who love thee,
All who are loved by thee;
Pray, too, for those who hate thee,
If any such there be:

Then for thyself, in meekness,

A blessing humbly claim, And link with each petition

Thy great Redeemer's name.

3 Or if 'tis e'er denied thee
In solitude to pray,

Should holy thoughts come o'er thee
When friends are round thy way,

E'en then the silent breathing

The spirit raised above,

May reach His throne of glory,
Of mercy, truth, and love.

4 Whene'er thou pinest in sadness,
Before His footstool fall;
Remember in thy gladness
His grace who gave thee all:
Oh, not a joy or blessing

With this we can compare-
The power that He hath given us,
To pour our souls in prayer.

Thy will be done.-Matt. vi. 10. 1 My God, rom my home on life's rough Y God, my Father, while I stray

Oh, teach me from my heart to say, [way,
Thy will be done!

2 If Thou shouldst call me to resign
What most I prize-it ne'er was mine:
I only yield Thee what was Thine ;-
Thy will be done!

3 E'en if again I ne'er should see
The friends more dear than life to me,
Ere long we both shall be with Thee;-
Thy will be done!

4 Should pining sickness waste away
My life, in premature decay!
My Father, still I strive to say,
Thy will be done!

5 If but my fainting heart be blest
With Thy sweet Spirit for its guest,
My God, to Thee I leave the rest;-
Thy will be done!

6 Renew my will from day to day;
Blend it with Thine, and take away
All that now makes it hard to say,
Thy will be done!

7 Then when on earth I breathe no more
The prayer, oft mixed with tears before,
I'll sing upon a happier shore ;-
Thy will be done!

The hour of prayer.-Aets iii. 1.

1 WEET hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!

That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father's throne
Make all my wants and wishes known:
In seasons of distress and grief
My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter's snare,
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer.

2 Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of
Thy wings shall my petition bear [prayer!
To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless :
And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His word, and trust His grace,
I'll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!
3 Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of
May I thy consolation share, [prayer!
Till, from Mount Pisgah's lofty height,
I view my home and take my flight.
This robe of flesh I'll drop, and rise
To seize the everlasting prize;

And shout, while passing through the air, "Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!"
