COUNTY SEAT-STOCKTON.

San Joaquin County, organized 1850. Boundaries: North by Sacramento, east by Calaveras, south by Stanislaus and west by Alameda, Contra Costa and Sacramento.

Topography. The land in this county is well adapted for agricultural and grazing purposes. There is a large amount of valuable swamp land, which, when reclaimed, will produce every variety of crops. Area of the county, one thousand four hundred and fifty-two square miles, of which four hundred and twenty miles are swamp, and the remainder upland. Number of acres inclosed, one hundred and eight thousand two hundred and thirty-three; under cultivation, seventy-two thousand seven hundred and forty-three. Legal Distances.-From Sacramento, forty-five miles, and from San Quentin, one hundred and thirty miles.

Ditches and Canals.-Number of canals, 2; length, 21 miles. Cost of construction, $100,000.

Artesian Well.-The artesian well in Stockton is 1,002 feet in depth. The water from this well rises 11 feet above the surface of the plain, and 9 feet above the established grade of the city. The temperature of the water as it issues from the well surface, is 77 degrees, the atmosphere being 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The quantity of water discharged is about 360,000 gallons per day.

Bridges and Ferries.-Bridges, 7; value, $50,000; ferries, 13; value, $25,000.

Insane Asylum.—This important State Institution* is located in the city of Stockton, upon an extensive and beautiful tract of land. The various buildings connected with the institution are in character with the important purposes to which they are dedicated.

Finances, May, 1858.-Funded debt, $52,336, interest 10 per cent.; floating debt, $36,000, interest, 10 per cent.; total, $88,336. Receipts from April 1, 1857, to March 31, 1858, $85,165 55; expenditures, for the same period, $85,129 38; assessed value of property, $4,891,250.

Topography.—This county is principally a grazing district, and in this respect it is unsurpassed. In area, it is estimated to contain about six hundred thousand acros, of which forty thousand are adapted to cultivation.

There is a limited quantity of timber, consisting of pine, oak, cottonwood, etc. Number of acres in cultivation, three thousand.

Mineral Resources.—Gold and silver abound in the eastern portion of the county.

XXIX. - SAN MATEO COUNTY.

COUNTY SEAT-REDWOOD CITY.

San Mateo County, organized 1856. Boundaries: North by San Francisco and bay, east by the bay and Santa Clara. south by Santa Clara and Santa Cruz, and west by the Pacific.

Topography. This county was organized in 1856, from the southern portion of San Francisco County, and contains an area of one hundred and fifty-four thousand nine hundred and eighty-one acres, a large portion of which is well adapted for agricultural and grazing purposes. Timber is abundant. Number of acres in cultivation, estimated at twenty thousand.

Legal Distances.-From Sacramento, one hundred and forty miles; from Stockton, one hundred and forty miles, and from San Quentin, forty miles.
