Mineral Resources.-The mineral lands in this county, since the existence of gold therein was known, have been successfully worked by a large number of persons. There are several rich quartz leads in this county. Quartz mills, 5-water, 4, steam, 1; aggregate number of stamps, 20; cost of construction, $48,000. Copper and iron ore exist in considerable quantities, which is said to be very rich. Salt and sulphur springs, and several extensive beds of stone coal have been recently discovered, but, as yet, their value has not been tested.

Canals and Water Ditches.-Number of canals, 24; aggregate length, 104 miles; cost of construction, $300,000; in course of completion, length, 40 miles.

Finances, August, 1858.-Floating debt, $56,447; interest, 10 per cent.; cash in treasury, $3,384; actual debt, $53,063; receipts for past fiscal year, $40,000; expenditures same period, $28,151; assessed value of property, $1,803,296 90.

Sierra County, organized 1852. Boundaries: North by Plumas, east by Utah Territory, south by Nevada and west by Yuba.

Topography. The entire surface of this county is composed of mineral land, and but a small portion thereof is adapted for agricultural purposes. A few small tracts in the vicinity of the rivers and creeks are cultivated for the. raising of vegetables. The timber of the county is principally pine, with a little oak of an inferior quality. Number of acres in cultivation, five hundred and seventy-five.

Legal Distances.-From Sacramento, one hundred and ten miles; from Stockton, one hundred and fifty-five miles, and from San Quentin, two hundred and forty miles.

Mineral Resources.-Gold is found in every section of the county, and in great abundance. There are numerous expensive tunnels that have been opened at a cost of $500,000, which have yielded large sums to their owners. Quartz mills, 11; aggregate number of stamps, 30; cost of construction, $105,000. Limestone exists in considerable quantities. A marble quarry is being opened in the vicinity of Downieville.

Finances, August, 1858.—Funded debt, $28,874, at ten per cent.; floating, $39,859-total, $68,733. Receipts for 1857-8, $84,016 78; expenditures, same period, $119,077 46; assessed value of property, $2,348,413.

Topography. The land in this county is well adapted for agricultural and grazing purposes. There are about one hundred thousand acres, of which one-tenth is swamp and overflowed land, that may be reclaimed at a reasonable expense. Gold is found in great abundance in the vicinity of the creeks and rivers, and the deposits on the eastern and southern portions of the county, are rich and extensive. There is an abundance of timber in Scott and Shasta valleys. Number of acres in cultivation, twenty-two thousand one hundred and twenty-three.

Legal Distances.-From Sacramento, three hundred and fifty miles; from Stockton, three hundred and ninety-five miles, and from San Quentin, four hundred and eighty miles.

Mineral Resources.—The gold mines in this county are paying a reasonable income. The creeks and rivers pay better than the dry or deep diggings. There has been a great deal of prospecting done within the past two years, and rich deposits have been discovered, both in the wet and dry diggings. The mines have proved to be very extensive-in fact the mining region extends over the larger portion of the county. In all the streams, gold has been discovered. The more recent discoveries have been made in the eastern These deposits have been rich and extensive. In quartz leads are to be found in various sections, which will in a few years, prove to be as productive as any in this vicinity. Solano County, organized 1850. Boundaries: North by Yolo, east by the Sacramento River, south by Suisun Bay and west by Napa.

Topography.-A large extent of the land in this county is well adapted for agricultural and grazing purposes. The area of the county is estimated at nine hundred and six square miles, or five hundred and eighty thousand acres, of which two hundred thousand are susceptible of cultivation; one hundred and fifty thousand for grazing purposes, and ninety thousand tule land. Number of acres in cultivation, thirty-seven thousand two hundred and fifty-five.

Legal Distances.-From Sacramento, ninety miles; from Stockton, ninety miles, and from San Quentin, forty-five miles, (from Benicia.)
