Saw Mills.-There are two saw mills, both propelled by water.

Insane Asylum.-This important State Institution* is located in the City of Stockton, upon an extensive and beautiful tract of land. The various buildings connected with the Institution are in character with the important purposes to which they are dedicated.

San Luis Obispo County, organized 1850. Boundaries: North by Monterey, east by Tulare, south by Santa Barbara, and west by Pacific Ocean. Topography.-This county is principally a grazing district, and in this respect it is unsurpassed. In area, it is estimated to contain about six hundred thousand acres, of which forty thousand are adapted to cultivation. There is a limited quantity of timber, consisting of pine, oak, cottonwood, etc. Number of acres in cultivation, ten thousand.

Legal Distances. From Sacramento, four hundred and sixty miles; from Stockton, four hundred and seventy miles, and from San Quentin, three hundred and thirty-five miles.

San Mateo County, organized 1856. Boundaries: North by San Francisco and bay, east by the bay and Santa Clara, south by Santa Clara and Santa Cruz and west by the Pacific.

Topography. This county was organized in 1856, from the southern portion of San Francisco County, and contains an area of about 130,000 acres, a large portion of which is well adapted for agricultural and grazing purposes. Timber is abundant. Number of acres in cultivation, estimated at thirty thousand.

Legal Distances.-Not yet defined by law. From San Francisco to Redwood City, County Seat, thirty-one miles.

Mineral Resources.—Coal, which is represented to be of the best quality. Mineral springs, of sulphur and iron, are found on the Purissimo, about thirty miles from San Francisco, the medicinal properties of which are represented to be equal to any in the State.

[County Seat-Santa Barbara.]

Santa Barbara County, organized 1850. Boundaries: North by San Luis Obispo and Tulare, east by Tulare and San Bernardino, south and west by the Pacific Ocean.

Topography. This is one of the most extensive stock raising districts in the State. The land in this county is generally adapted to agricultural purposes and the cultivation of fruit of every description. Number of acres in cultivation is estimated at five thousand.

Legal Distances.-From Sacramento, five hundred and ninety miles; from Stockton, six hundred miles, and from San Quentin, four hundred and sixtyfive miles.

B. Thompson, are engaged in turning to conspicuous advantage.
