[County Seat-Santa Cruz.]

Santa Cruz County, organized 1850. Boundaries: North by Santa Clara and San Mateo, east by Santa Clara, south by Monterey and the Pacific, and west by the Pacific.

Topography.—The land in this county is well adapted for agricultural and grazing purposes. Of the former there is an extent of one hundred and eighty square miles, and of the latter one hundred and fifty square miles. Number of acres assessed, 161,228; under cultivation, 18, 229.

Legal Distances.-From Sacramento, two hundred and sixty miles; from Stockton, two hundred and seventy miles, and from San Quentin, one hundred and thirty-five miles.

Tannery.—The Santa Cruz Tannery, located near Santa Cruz, is the largest and most complete establishment of the kind in the State. Capacity per month, 700 sides leather.

Mineral Resources.-Gold is known to exist in this county, throughout an area of twenty square miles. Up to the present period only a small yield has been obtained, not sufficient to remunerate those who have prospected in search of it. There is a quartz mill in operation, which is said to be profitable to the proprietors. Lime stone exists in large quantities, and about 4,000 barrels of lime are manufactured monthly.

Finances.-December 15, 1856: Floating debt, warrants, ten per cent., $12,000. Receipts for 1856, $12,000. Expenditures same period, $11,500. Excess, $500.

XXXIII.-SHASTA COUNTY.

[County Seat-Shasta.]

Shasta County, organized 1850. Boundaries: North by Siskiyou, east by Utah Territory and Plumas, south by Colusa, Butte and Plumas and west by the Coast Range.

Topography.-A small portion of the land in this county is suitable for agricultural purposes. An extent of land covering an area of one hundred square miles is filled with the finest quality of pine and fir timber. The mineral lands extend throughout a large portion of the mountainous districts, and mining is extensively and profitably carried on. Number of acres

of land claimed, 30,515; inclosed, 18,431; under cultivation, 7,748. Legal Distances.-From Sacramento, two hundred and twenty-five miles; from Stockton, two hundred and eighty miles, and from San Quentin, three hundred and eighty miles.

Saw Mills.-Number of saw mills, 13; propelled by water, 12; by steam, 1; capacity per day, 41,000 feet lumber. Cost of construction, $64,500. Tannery.-There is a tannery located near Shasta, which is profitable to the owners. Cost, $5,000.

Mineral Resources.-Gold is found in abundance in various portions of this county, and many of the mining localities have yielded very large sums.

Quartz Mills.-Number of quartz mills, 2; both propelled by water. Cost of construction, $40,000. Another in course of construction.

Water Ditches and Canals.-Number of ditches and canals, 10; aggregate length, 104 miles. Cost, $227,000. There are several smaller ditches in this county.

Mineral Resources.-There are several valuable springs in this county. The waters are strongly tinctured with mineral substances. Salt and sulphur generally predominate. Several of these springs emit strong currents of gas, which easily ignites, and continues to burn until put out. The gas is sometimes used for boiling the salt water for bathing purposes, for which many of these springs are highly recommended.

Finances.-January 1, 1857: Floating debt, $38,268. Receipts for year ending October 1, 1856, $48,230; balance on hand in 1855, $1,850; total, $50,080. Expenditures same period, $44,639 54; excess, $5,440 46.

XXXIV. SIERRA COUNTY.

[County Seat-Downieville.]

Sierra County, organized 1852. Boundaries: North by Plumas, east by Utah Territory, south by Nevada, and west by Yuba.

Topography. The entire surface of the county is composed of mineral land. About five hundred acres are adapted for agricultural purposes, of which about one hundred and twenty-five acres are cultivated for home consumption.

Legal Distances.-From Sacramento, one hundred and ten miles; from Stockton, one hundred and sixty-five miles, and from San Quentin, two hundred and sixty-five miles.

Agricultural Products.-There is but a small quantity of grain raised in this county. The small quantity of land cultivated produces an insufficient supply of vegetables for the population.

Fruit Trees.-There are about one thousand fruit trees, consisting principally of peach, apple and pear, which appear to thrive remarkably well. There are also a number of grape-vines, none of which have yielded any

fruit as yet.

Live Stock.-Horses, 55; mules, 397; asses, 4; cattle, 197; swine, 151; total, 104.

Saw Mills.-Number of saw mills, 29; propelled by steam, 10; by water, 19; capacity, 102,500 feet of lumber per day; cost of construction, $190,000. Mineral Resources.-Almost the entire surface of the county abounds with gold; other minerals are occasionally found in small quantities, principally in in the form of oxides or sulphurets. Springs impregnated with sulphur are found in the north-eastern portion of the Sierra Valley. The mineral wealth of this county is said to be nuarly equal to that of any other district in the State. Estimated yield for the last year, $3,000,000.

Quartz Mills.-There are two quartz mills in course of construction in this county.

Water Ditches.-Number in the county, 90; length of those known, 116 miles; valuation, $512,950.

Toll-Bridges.-There are three toll-bridges, valued at $6,300.

Finances.-December 1, 1856: Funded debt, ten per cent, $33,000; floating debt, $4,000; total, $37,000. Receipts for fiscal year, $43,099 71; expenditures same period, $24,296 54; excess, $18,803 17; amount paid into State Treasury, same period, $13,754 22.
