Topography.-The land in this county is well adapted for agricultural and grazing purposes. There are about one hundred thousand acres, of which one-tenth is swamp and overflowed land, that may be reclaimed at a reasonable expense. Gold is found in great abundance in the vicinity of the

creeks and rivers, and the deposits on the eastern and southern portions of the county, are rich and extensive. Number of acres in cultivation, fifteen thousand and seventy; used for grazing purposes, thirty-three thousand.

Legal Distances.-From Sacramento, four hundred and twenty miles; from Stockton, four hundred and seventy-five miles, and from San Quentin, five hundred and seventy-five miles.

Grist Mills.-Number of grist mills, 4; all of which are propelled by water; total run of stone, 8; capacity, 200 barrels of flour per day; aggregate cost, $83,000.

Saw Mills.-Number of saw mills, 11; propelled by steam, 1; by water, 10; four of the latter are attached to the grist mills above mentioned; capacity, 31,500 feet lumber per day; cost of construction, $58,000.

Distillery.-There is an extensive distillery in successful operation, near the Ætna Mills, Scott's Valley; Miller & Davidson, proprietors.

Toll-Bridges and Ferries.-There are four toll-bridges, which cost $12,000; and eight ferries, $8,000; total, $20,000.

Mineral Resources.-The gold mines in this county are paying a reasonable income. The creeks and rivers pay better than the dry or deep diggings. There has been a great deal of prospecting done within the past year, and rich deposits have been discovered, both in the wet and dry diggings. The mines have proved to be very extensive-in fact, the mining region extends over the larger portion of the county. In all the streams, gold has been discovered. The more recent discoveries have been made in the eastern part of the county. These deposits have been rich and extensive.

Quartz Mill.-There is a quartz mill in the course of construction. Quartz veins abound throughout the county.

Water Ditches.-There are ten water ditches in operation, the length of which is one hundred and forty-eight miles. Cost of construction, $350,000. * Attached to Ninth Judicial District.-Act of Legislature, February 14, 1857.

Solano County, organized 1850. Boundaries: North by Yolo, east by the Sacramento River, south by Suisun Bay, and west by Napa.

Topography.-A large extent of the land in this county is well adapted for agricultural and grazing purposes. The area of the county is estimated at nine hundred and six square miles, or five hundred and eighty thousand acres, of which two hundred thousand are susceptible of cultivation; one hundred and fifty thousand for grazing purposes, and ninety thousand tule land. Number of acres in cultivation, twenty-one thousand five hundred.

Fruit Trees.-Number of apple trees, 1,200; peach, 7,500; pear, 750; various, 1,000; grape vines, 56,178. In several parts of this county fruit thrives well. The early efforts of Mr. Wolfskill, on Putah Creek, in the introduction and successful cultivation of a great variety of tropical fruits, have materially contributed to the development of the pomological resources of the State.

Live Stock.-Number of horses, 3,689; mules, 400; cattle, 18,710; sheep, 15,113; goats, 500; swine, 7,000.

Grist Mills.-Number of grist mills, 3; propelled by steam, 2; by water, 1; total run of stone, 7.

United States Navy Yard.*-This important station is located at Mare Island, and is rapidly progressing in every facility necessary to afford such assistance as the wants of the marine of the Pacific Coast may demand.

Works of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company.-The works of this company are located at Benicia, and are the most extensive establishment of the kind on the Pacific. The foundries and machine shops are supplied with the necessary appliances to render any repairs to the company's vessels which may be required.

Mineral Resources.-There are numerous mineral springs in this county; those in the vicinity of Benicia are said to possess important medicinal qualities, and will at some future day attract public attention.

Finances.-November 1, 1856: Amount of funded debt, ten per cent., to date, $27,828 30; interest on same, 1,836 66; floating debt and interest, $28,167 14; total, $57,832. Receipts into County Treasury from March 20, 1856, to January 12, 1857, $39,162 98; expenditures for same period, $38,845 30. City of Benicia-December 10, 1856; Amount of funded debt, twelve per cent., $44,850; floating debt, $20,000; total, $64,850. Receipts of taxes, etc., since January 1, 1856, $8,000; sales city property, $17,000; total, $25,000. Expenditures same period: city expenses, $3,500; interest on funded debt and school fund, $4,800; redemption of floating debt, $3,000; do. of funded debt, $13,700; total expenditures, $25,000.

XXXVII.--SONOMA COUNTY.

[County Seat-Santa Rosa.]

Sonoma County, organized 1850. Boundaries: North by Mendocino, east by Napa, south by San Pablo Bay, and west by Marin and the Pacific. Topography.—The advantages of Sonoma as an agricultural and grazing district, are not excelled by any other county in the State. The entire section, from the coast to the western edge of the Sacramento Valley, comprising a number of the most beautiful valleys, affords an excellent range for stock, and as a grazing district has no superior on the coast. Number of acres in cultivation, including Mendocino County, twenty-five thousand. Legal Distances.—From Sacramento, one hundred and thirty-eight miles; from Stockton, one hundred and ninety miles, and from San Quentin, forty miles.
