Agricultural Products.-Wheat, 6,420 acres, 192,600 bushels; barley, 2,188 acres, 65,640 bushels; oats, 4 657 acres, 162,995 bushels; corn, 2,126 acres, 85,040 bushels; rye, 46 acres; buckwheat, 444 acres, 6,660 bushels; beans, 540 acres, 6,480 bushels; peas, 572 acres, 11,440 bushels; potatoes, 1,800 acres, 2,700 tons. The agricultural interests of this county are in a most flourishing condition. The sales from the products of the dairy and poultry, during the year 1856, amounted to $500,000.

Fruit Trees.-Apple, 17,225; peach, 8,554; pear, 1,021; plum, cherry, quince, fig and almond, 798; all these varieties of fruit flourish well; grape vines, 61,590; the soil and climate are well adapted to the cultivation of grape. The yield of last season was estimated at sixty tons, most of which were sold at fair prices, and the balance manufactured into wine.

Live Stock.-Horses, 5,590; mules, 294; asses, 4; cattle, 32,504; sheep, 10,814; goats, 73; swine, 16,886; wool, 15,000 pounds.

Grist Mills.-Number of grist mills, 9; propelled by steam, 2; by water, 7; total run of stone, 11; capacity, 260 barrels of flour per day; value of construction, $28,000.

Saw Mills.-Number of saw mills, 8; propelled by steam, 3; by water, 5; capacity, 2,800 feet of lumber per day; cost of construction, $70,000.

Finances.-February 5, 1857: Amount of floating debt, $27,281; cash in treasury, $5,000; actual debt, $22,281; receipts for year ending December 31, 1856, $39,000; expenditures, $25,000.

XXXVIII.-STANISLAUS COUNTY.

[County Seat-La Grange.]

Stanislaus County, organized 1854. Boundaries: North by San Joaquin, east by Tuolumne, south by Merced, and west by Santa Clara.

Topography.-There is a large amount of land in this county well adapted for agricultural and grazing purposes. The tract between the San Joaquin and the Coast Range, and the bottom lands on the Tuolumne and Stanislaus Rivers, are mostly pre-empted and under good cultivation. There are also about fifty thousand acres of valuable swamp and overflowed lands, upon which is to be found considerable timber, oak and willow, suitable for fencing and fuel. The mineral land in this county is extensive, and in the vicinity of the Tuolumne and Stanislaus, it is very rich. There are numerous flats and gulches which have prospected well, but they have not been extensively worked for want of water. Number of acres of land under cultivation is about eight thousand.

Legal Distances.-From Sacramento, ninety miles; from Stockton, forty miles, and from San Quentin, one hundred and ninety-five miles.

Grist Mills.-There is one grist mill, which is propelled by water, with six run of stone; capacity, 175 barrels of flour per day; cost of construction, $40,000.

Saw Mills.-There is one saw mill, which is propelled by water; capacity, 5,000 feet of lumber per day; cost of construction, $15,000.

Canals and Water Ditches.-There are thirty miles of canals and ditches built and in the course of construction, estimated cost, $240,000.

Finances.-December 5, 1856: Floating debt, due Tuolumne County, $16,000; warrants, $6,300; total, $22,300. Receipts for fiscal year, $6,150. Expenditures same period, $6,720.

Topography. The land in this county is almost entirely adapted to agricultural and grazing purposes. About one-fifth is composed of overflowed land, which affords, for several months of the year, an excellent range for stock. Timber exists in limited quantities. Area of the county, four hundred thousand acres; under cultivation, twelve thousand five hundred and sixty-two.

Legal Distances.-Erom Sacramento, thirty miles; from Stockton, eightyfive miles, and from San Quentin, one hundred and eighty-five miles.

Hock Farm.-The residence of General John A. Sutter, is most pleasantly situated on the banks of the Feather River. It comprises a large tract of land, under a high state of cultivation. The home of this veteran Pioneer of western civilization is an attractive resort to many a visitor, who never fails to meet with that cordial hospitality for which its respected owner is so celebrated.

Tehama County, organized 1856. Boundaries: North by Shasta, east by Plumas, south by Butte, and west by Colusa.

Topography. There is but a small amount of land in this county adapted for cultivation. About one-fourth of the area, situated in the vicinity of the Sacramento, is suitable for the production of grain, etc. There is an abundance of timber, consisting of pine, alder, ash, sycamore, etc, Number of acres in cultivation, fourteen thousand one hundred and seventy-five. Distilleries.-There is an extensive distillery at, Red Bluffs, which is capable of manufacturing 500 gallons of whiskey in twenty-four hours.

Indian Reservations.t-Nome Lackee Reservation and Nome Cult Farm Reserve, are both located in this county. Number of Indians located thereon, 3,500.
