The mentioned references showing the holdings of public domain (outside of Alaska), by agency, for the period 1946-1956. These indicate a reduction of BLM holdings of some 3,000,000 acres resulting from net transfers to other agencies by withdrawal and exchange of public lands for lands within reservations. This would mean that some 5,000,000 acres were disposed of to State and local governments and to private individuals and companies. This is generally confirmed by the data on disposals which follow. Analysis of available data for Alaska shows a net reduction of BLM holdings of some 18 million acres, resulting from transfers to the State of a little more than 4 million acres, transfers to private individuals and companies of about one half million acres, and net withdrawals of about 13 million acres.
