H! worship the King all glorious above! Oh! gratefully sing His power and His love! Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, Pavilioned with splendour and girded with praise!
Oh! tell of His might, oh! sing of His grace, Whose robe is the light, Whose canopy space : His chariots of wrath the deep thunder-clouds form,
And dark is His path on the wings of the storm.
This earth, with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, Thy power hath founded of old; Hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, And round it hath cast like a mantle the sea.
Thy bountiful care what tongue can recite ? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light, It streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, And sweetly distils in the dew and the rain.
Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail : Thy mercies how tender, how sure to the end, Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer and Friend!
PRAISED the earth, in beauty seen With garlands gay of various green; I praised the sea, whose ample field Shone glorious as a silver shield; And earth and ocean seemed to say, Our beauties are but for a day.'
I praised the sun, whose chariot rolled On wheels of amber and of gold; I praised the moon, whose softer eye Gleamed sweetly through the summer sky; And moon and sun in answer said, 'Our days of light are numberèd.'
O God, O Good beyond compare, If thus Thy meaner works are fair, If thus Thy bounties gild the span Of ruined earth and sinful man, How glorious must the mansions be Where Thy redeemed shall dwell with Thee!
HE spacious firmament on high, With all the blue ethereal sky, And spangled heavens, a shining frame. Their great Original proclaim. The unwearied sun from day to day Does his Creator's power display, And publishes to every land The work of an Almighty Hand.
Soon as the evening shades prevail, The moon takes up the wondrous tale, And nightly to the listening earth Repeats the story of her birth;
Whilst all the stars that round her burn, And all the planets in their turn, Confirm the tidings as they roll
And spread the truth from pole to pole.
What though in solemn silence all Move round the dark terrestrial ball? What though nor real voice nor sound Amid their radiant orbs be found? In reason's ear they all rejoice, And utter forth a glorious voice, For ever singing, as they shine, 'The Hand that made us is Divine.'
'OR the beauty of the earth, For the glory of the skies,
For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies,
Lord of all, to Thee we raise This our grateful psalm of praise.
For the wonder of each hour Of the day and of the night, Hill and vale, and tree and flower, Sun and moon, and stars of light, Lord of all, to Thee we raise This our grateful psalm of praise.
For the joy of human love, Brother, sister, parent, child, Friends on earth, and friends above, Pleasures pure and undefiled,
Lord of all, to Thee we raise This our grateful psalm of praise.
For Thy Church that evermore Lifteth holy hands above, Offering up on every shore Her pure sacrifice of love, Lord of all, to Thee we raise This our grateful psalm of praise.
"HERE is a book, who runs may read, Which heavenly truth imparts;
And all the lore its scholars need, Pure eyes and Christian hearts.
The works of God above, below, Within us and around,
Are pages in that book to show How God Himself is found.
The glorious sky embracing all Is like the Maker's love, Wherewith encompassed, great and small In peace and order move.
The moon above, the Church below, A wondrous race they run;
But all their radiance, all their glow, Each borrows of its Sun.
Two worlds are ours: 'tis only sin Forbids us to descry
The mystic heaven and earth within, Plain as the sea and sky.
Thou, Who hast given me eyes to see And love this sight so fair, Give me a heart to find out Thee,
And read Thee everywhere.
