4 Thou art the First, and Thou the Last;

Time centres all in Thee,
Th' Almighty God, who was, and is,
And evermore shall be.

IV. The Holy Spirit.

"He shall receive of Mine,

and shall show it unto you.'

1 COME, Holy Ghost, in love, Shed on us from above

Thine own bright ray!

Divinely good Thou art;
Thy sacred gifts impart
To gladden each sad heart:

Oh, come to-day!

2 Come, tenderest Friend, and best, Our most delightful Guest,

With soothing power:

Rest, which the weary know,
Shade, 'mid the noontide glow,
Peace, when deep griefs o'erflow,
Cheer us, this hour!

3 Come, Light serene, and still
Our inmost bosoms fill ;

Dwell in each breast:
We know no dawn but Thine;
Send forth Thy beams divine,
In our dark souls to shine

And make us blest!

4 Exalt our low desires;
Extinguish passion's fires;
Heal every wound :
Our stubborn spirits bend;
Our icy coldness end;
Our devious steps attend,
While heavenward bound.

5 Come, all the faithful bless;
Let all who Christ confess
His praise employ:
Give virtue's rich reward;
Victorious death accord,
And, with our gracious Lord,
Eternal joy! Amen.

139

Amen.

"Your body is the templ of the Holy Ghost."

1 CREATOR Spirit, by whose aid
The world's foundations first were
laid,

Come, visit every pious mind;
Come, pour Thy joys on human kind;
From sin and sorrow set us free,
And make Thy temples worthy Thee.

2 O Source of uncreated light,

The Father's promised Paraclete,
Thrice holy Fount, thrice holy Fire,
Our hearts with heavenly love
inspire;

Come, and Thy sacred unction bring
To sanctify us while we sing.

3 Plenteous of grace, descend from high,

Rich in Thy sevenfold energy! Make us eternal truths receive, And practise all that we believe; Give us Thyself, that we may see The Father and the Son by Thee. 4 Immortal honour, endless fame, Attend the Almighty Father's name! The Saviour Son be glorified, Who for lost man's redemption died! And equal adoration be,

Eternal Paraclete, to Thee! Amen.

"The Spirit also helpeth our infirmities."

I COME, Holy Spirit, calm our minds, And fit us to approach our God; Remove each vain, each worldly thought,

"As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God."

1 COME, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove,

With light and comfort from above; Be Thou our Guardian, Thou our Guide,

O'er every thought and step preside. 2 The light of truth to us display, And make us know and love Thy way;

Plant holy fear in every heart, That we from God may ne'er depart. 3 Lead us to holiness, the road

That we must take to dwell with
God:

Lead us to Christ, the living Way;
Nor let us from His pastures stray.

4 Lead us to heaven, the seat of bliss,
Where pleasure in perfection is:
Lead us to God, our final rest,
To be with Him, for ever blest.

143

Amen.

"The entrance of Thy
words giveth light."

I THE Spirit breathes upon the word,
And brings the truth to sight;
Precepts and promises afford
A sanctifying light.

2 A glory gilds the sacred page,
Majestic, like the sun;
It gives a light to every age,
It gives, but borrows none.

3 The hand, that gave it, still supplies
The gracious light and heat:
His truths upon the nations rise;
They rise, but never set.

4 Let everlasting thanks be Thine,
For such a bright display
As makes a world of darkness shine
With beams of heavenly day.
5 My soul rejoices to pursue

The steps of Him I love,
Till glory breaks upon my view
Amen.
In brighter worlds above.

I GRACIOUS Spirit dwell with me!
I myself would gracious be;
And, with words that help and heal,
Would Thy life in mine reveal;
And, with actions bold and meek,
Would for Christ, my Saviour, speak.

2 Truthful Spirit, dwell with me!
I myself would truthful be;
And, with wisdom kind and clear,
Let Thy life in mine appear;
And, with actions brotherly,
Speak my Lord's sincerity.

3 Tender Spirit, dwell with me!
I myself would tender be;
Shut my heart up like a flower,
In temptation's darksome hour;
Open it when shines the sun,
And His love by fragrance own.

4 Mighty Spirit, dwell with me!
I myself would mighty be;
Mighty, so as to prevail
Where unaided man must fail;
Ever, by a mighty hope,
Pressing on and bearing up.

5 Holy Spirit, dwell with me!
I myself would holy be;
Separate from sin, I would
Choose and cherish all things good;
And, whatever I can be,

Give to Him who gave me Thee!
Amen.

Spirit of purity and grace,

Our weakness, pitying, see: Ob, make our hearts Thy dwellingplace,

147

And worthier Thee! Amen.

They were all filled with
the Holy Ghost."

LORD God, the Holy Ghost,
In this accepted hour,
As on the day of Pentecost,
Descend in all Thy power;
We meet with one accord
In our appointed place,

And wait the promise of our Lord,
The Spirit of all grace.

Like mighty rushing wind
Upon the waves beneath,

Move with one impulse every mind,
One soul, one feeling breathe;
The young, the old inspire
With wisdom from above;
And give us hearts and tongues of
fire,

To pray and praise and love.

Spirit of light, explore

And chase our gloom away,

With lustre shining more and more
Unto the perfect day;
Spirit of truth, be Thou
In life and death our Guide;
O Spirit of adoption, now
May we be sanctified! Amen.

1 To Thee, O Comforter Divine, For all Thy grace and power benign, Sing we Hallelujah!

To Thee, whose faithful love had
place

In God's great covenant of grace,
Sing we Hallelujah!

2 To Thee, whose faithful voice doth win

The wandering from the ways of sin, Sing we Hallelujah!

To Thee, whose faithful power doth heal,

Enlighten, sanctify, and seal,

Sing we Hallelujah!

3 To Thee, whose faithful truth is shown

By every promise made our own,
Sing we Hallelujah!

To Thee, our Teacher and our Friend,
Our faithful Leader to the end,

Sing we Hallelujah!

Comforter Divine! Amen.
