SCHOLARS OF TRINITY COLLEGE.

In the following list of Scholars, we do not deem it necessary to go farther back than the Restoration. At that period it was found that none of the persons then in possession had any legal title either to Fellowships or Scholarships: and accordingly the Fellows were appointed immediately by the King, and, after their own admission, proceeded to the election of Scholars.

The names of those who were afterwards Fellows are marked thus (*); and their subsequent preferments will be found in the list of Fellows.

The election of Scholars in the year 1660-1 is recorded in the College Register in the following words:

“Mar. 7, 1660. Cum scholares, nobiliora Collegii membra, juxta statuta ejusdem prædicti eligi debeant Die Lunæ proxime post Dominicam Trinitatis; cumque temporum iniquitas legalem scholarium electionem (quam res Collegii necessario nunc exigunt) ante nostram in Præpositum et socios seniores Collegii prædicti admissionem protinus impediverit.
