If on Candlemas day, second of February, it is bright and clear the ground hog will stay in its den, thus indicating that more snow and cold are to come; but if it snows or rains he will creep out, as the winter is ended.

Cut a snowball in halves; if it is wet inside, the snow will pass off with rain;

if it is dry inside, the snow will be melted by the sun.

The bear comes out on the second of February, and if he sees his shadow he returns for six weeks.

Don't plant your corn when the turtledove cries.

When fowls roost in daytime, expect rain.
Pigeons return home unusually early before rain.
Quails are more abundant during an easterly wind.

THE GREATEST CATARACT.

The greatest cataract in the world, surpassing by far Niagara and Zambezi Falls, is on the Ignazu river, which partly separates Brazil from Argentina, one thousand miles by boat from the nearest settlement. The precipice over which the river plunges is 210 feet high, that of Niagara being 167 feet. The cataract is 13,123 feet wide, or about two and a half times as wide as Niagara. It is estimated that 100,000,000 tons of water pass over Niagara in an hour. A like estimate gives the Falls of Ignazu 140,000,000 tons.

INAUGURATION OF PRESIDENT WILSON.

On the 4th of March Woodrow Wilson was inaugurated President of the United States, the first Democratic President since the inauguration of Mr. Cleveland in 1893, 20 years back. Washington was filled with an unusually large crowd, the weather was good, and there was no untoward occurrence to mar the ceremonies. The inaugural address was brief, scholarly and lofty. The announcement of the Cabinet was well received, and there was a singular absence of harsh and hostile criticism. It seemed almost as if a second "era of good feeling" had come.
