POINTS ABOUT DECEMBER.

December derives its name from the fact that the ancient Roman calendar was divided into 10 months, the last being designated "decem," or tenth. Romulus gave it 30 days, Numa 29, while Julius Cæsar gave it 31. The ancient Roman Saturnalia occurred in this month, while with the coming of the Christian era it was supplanted by the celebration of Christmas, the most joyous event of the Christian year. In fact, the modern Germans call December Christmona. The winter solstice, upon which date the sun reaches the tropic of Capricorn, occurs December 22.
