HIGHEST POINT IN THE STATE.

The

The highest point in Maryland, according to the United States Geological Survey, is Backbone Mountain, in Garrett county, 3.340 feet above sea level. highest peak in the east of the Rockies is Mount Mitchell, in Western North Carolina, 6,711 feet. Mount Washington, New Hampshire, the highest in New England, rises 6,293 feeet. Mount Whitney, California, is 14,501 feet, while Mount McKinley, in Alaska, rises to a height of 20,300 feet.

GREATER BERLIN'S POPULATION.

Statistics showing "Greater Berlin's" population January 1, 1914, indicate that the Kaiser's capital may claim, in a way, to be the second largest city in Europe. With 4,010,434 inhabitants within the "metropolitan area" embraced by 88 separate boroughs or independent communities, only the population of LonLedon is greater, though if Paris applied the same standard and raked in everything as far remote as Versailles it probably could roll up a total as big or bigger than B Berlin's vaunted four million. The natural increase in population in Berlinexcess of births over deaths-averages 26,000 a year, a number which is heavily increased by the influx of provincial Germans, who flock to the cities from the land,
