On MARY, Queen of Scots.*

If Birth illuftrious, or if Beauty's Pride,
A guiltless Mind, and Faith feverely try'd;
If Wisdom, Fortitude, a candid Breath,
And Hope of him who comforts the Distress'd;
If Probity of Heart, with Patience mild.
To bear injurious Bonds, to be revil'd,
If Goodnefs, Majefty, a lib'ral Will

To raife the Wretched, and the Poor to fill,
Could 'fcape blind Fortune's Thunders, that alike
On good or bad, on low and lofty strike;
Thou hadft not carly fall'n by being great,
Nor thy fad Image feem'd to weep thy Fate.
Scotland by right, by Marriage France was thine,..
To thefe well-founded Hope did England join:
By triple Right, a triple Crown fhe wears,
But dim its Lufre to a Crown of Stars.
Happy, too happy, if, the Storm allay'd,
Tho' late the neighb'ring Realm had her obey'd:
But fee! he falls to triumph in the Grave;
New Vigour thence, and Fruits, her Branches have..
Conquer'd the conquers, free tho' clofe confin'd,
Not dead tho' flain, the Fates her Chains unbind.
So the prun'd Vine fhoots forth with fertile Sprays,
And the cut Gem reflects its purer Rays:
So genial Seeds, committed to the Earth,
Rife from the fruitful Soil, a brighter Birth.
With Blood, God's Covenant with Man was made;
With Blood, the Patriarchs his Wrath allay'd;

With Blood, the First-born 'fcap'd the gen'ral Doom;
Blood ftain'd the Land which now is her's become.
flay thy Vengeance Heav'n for Mercy's Sake!
That fatal Day be ever mark'd with Black,
To murther Kings abbor'd for evermore!
Nor Britain ftain'd again with Royal Gore :.
Let the Example perifh with the Blow,
Accurs'd its Author, and its A&tor too.
Since in her better Part. fhe triumphs ftill,
Dumb be her Fate, and filent ev'ry Ill.

Such was her Courfe as Heav'n thought fit to steer ::
She had her Joys, she knew her Sorrows, here.
Early to Life the Royal JAMES fhe gave,
Whom every kinder Pow'r in keeping have.
By Nuptials great, by Birth still greater known,
And greatest in her Iffue fuch a Son.

Here MARY lies! of whom we fighing fing,
The Daughter, Wife, and Mother of a King.
Grant, Heav'n, that to the latest Times her Race,
Their happy Hours without a Cloud may pass..

On

On HENRY the III. late King of France, flain by a Jacobine Fryer, 1589.

Whether thy Choyce or Chance thee hither brings,
Stay, Paffenger! and waile the Hap of Kings;
This little Stone a great King's Heart doth hold,
That rul'd the fickle French and Polack bold.
Whom! with a mighty warlike Hoft attended,
With trayterous Knife, a cowled Monster ended.

So frayle are even the highest earthly Things!
Go, Paffenger! and wayl the Fate of Kings.
