SECTION IX. 1. “ And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the holiest of all.” (Heb. ix. 3.) What is the tabernacle here spoken of, and what did it contain ? What is the second veil ? 2. Explain the following passage:

“ For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received just recompence of reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation,"

&c., &c.-(Heb. ii. 2, 3.) 3. Explain the words printed in italics in the following passages :

" By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac, and he that had received the promises offered his only Son." -(Heb. xi. 17.) “ Accounting that God was able to raise him from the dead, whence also he received him in a figure."-(Heb. xi. 19.).

Section X. 1. “ And he charged them saying, take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.”—(Mark viii. 15.) What is the “ leaven of Herod” here spoken of? Is there any other mention of the Herodians in Scripture ?

2. State concisely, according to the doctrine of the Church, God's method in the salvation of a sinner.

THE PRINCIPAL'S LECTURES.

Section I. 1. Between what two periods must the Church (on the authority of Scripture) have had its origin?

2. What authority is there for saying that St. Peter was Bishop of Rome ?

3. Was James, the Lord's brother, an apostle? How does Scripture indicate his position in the Church?

Section II. 1. What general persecutions of the Christians were instituted by public authority, and under what emperors ?

2. Who were the authors of the earliest, and who of the most celebrated, of the apologies for the Christian Church, and to whom were they addressed? 3. Give some account of St. Cypriau.

SECTION III. 1. What steps were taken by Adrian to reduce Jerusalem to the state of a heathen city, and what by Julian to restore it?

2. What was the heresy of the Montanists; who was its founder, and what steps were taken to suppress it?

3. What was the heresy of Noëtus; how was it modified by Sabellius, how by Paul of Samosata ?

Section IV. 1. Give some account of the circuinstances under which the Sacrament of Baptism was administered in the Anti-Nicene Church.

2. Under what forms is it probable that formularies of faith existed in the Primitive Church, and in what way does it appear (according to Burnet) that the Orthodoxy of the Creed of each new bishop was verified before he was received into Communion by the neighbouring bishops.

3. What was the distinctive mark of Arianism, and what was the question in dispute at the Council of Nice? Who were the chief abettors of this heresy?

SECTION V. Give some account of the Romish abuses1. Of penance, 2. Of indulgences and their origin.

3. Give some account of the witnesses for the truth in the Romish Church before the time of Luther.

SECTION VI. State some particulars as to1. The diet at Augsburg. 2. The diet at Worms. 3. The early life of Zwingle, and the commencement of the reformation in Switzerland.

Section I. 1. What are the testimonies of Irenæus and Tertullian as to the early introduction of Christianity in Britain, and to what periods do they refer?

2. What evidence have we of a persecution of the Church in Britain when under the dominion of the Romans? What was the period of that persecution; and under what circumstances did the first recorded martyrdom take place?

3. Under what circumstances and at what periods is mention made of the Bishops of the early British Church?

Section II. 1. Give some particulars as to the state of the British Church during the early period of the Saxon Heptarchy.

2. What part was taken in the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons by Bishops of the Scottislı, the Ancient British, and the Gallic Churches?

3. What steps did King Alfred take for the restoration of learning ? what ecclesiastical regulations did he make; and what abuses did he sanction ?

SECTION III. 1. Show that the Scriptures were not denied to the people in the

early English Church, and that transubstantiation was not then a doctrine of the Church.

2. What proof is there of the independence of the British Church before the mission of St. Augustine ?

3. To whom was the power of electing bishops and abbots conceded by King John ? When and under what circumstances did it become again a Royal prerogative? When and upon what pretence was the cup first denied to the laity by ecclesiastical authority ?

Section IV. 1. When were the Articles of Religion first published, what was their original number, and by whom were they drawn up? When and by whom were they afterwards revised ? What alterations were then made in them? What public sanction did they receive? When were they finally reviewed and ratified, and what alteration was then introduced into them?

2. Write out the Fourth Article, and give Scriptural authority for it.

3. Give Scriptural authority for the last clause of the Second Article; explain the term a true sacrifice," illustrate it by the example of the sacrifices of the great day of atonement, and show that Christ underwent for the atonement of sin that death which had been denounced against it, “ in like manner as though the sins of men had actually been transferred to him?"

Art of Teaching. What organization would you adopt in a school of 50 children ? How would you arrange them in your school-room? What subjects of instruction would you select? What books would you use? And what apparatus, supposing that you had the assistance of a pupil teacher from 15 to 17 years of age?

English History to Henry VIII.

SECTION I. 1. What Roman emperors died at York, and what emperor was born there?

2. Give some account of the history of Britain under the government of Agricola.

3. At what period, under what circumstances, and by the command of what emperor did the Romans abandon Britain ?

Section II. 1. Enumerate the kingdoms of the Saxon Heptarchy, and the counties severally included in them.

2. Into what great classes were the people divided in Anglo-Saxon times? What great council took a part in the government; of whom was it composed, and what were its functions ?

3. Of what learned men among the Anglo-Saxons has the memory reached our times, and what are the remains of Anglo-Saxon literature ?
