AZORES.

Plague St. Michaels Island.

During the period November 26-December 9, 1922, 34 cases of plague with 9 deaths were notified on St. Michaels Island, Azores. Of these, three cases occurred at the port of Ponta Delgada.

CANADA.

Communicable Diseases Ontario-December, 1922 (Comparative).

During the month of December, 1922, communicable diseases were notified in the Province of Ontario, Canada, as follows:

Venereal Diseases - December, 1922 (Comparative).

During the month of November, 1922, there were reported in the Province of Ontario 3 cases of chancroid, 179 of gonorrhea, and 133 of syphilis, as compared with 5 cases of chancroid, 230 of gonorrhea, and 183 of syphilis reported for the month of December, 1921.

CHILE.

Typhus Fever-Antofagasta-Nitrate Region.

Information dated December 5, 1922, shows spread of typhus fever at Antofagasta, Chile. A case, with fatal termination, was reported during the week ended November 11, 1922, in a laborer arrived from the south. The patient was later stated to have come from Taltal, a coast town. Spread of the disease at Antofagasta was reported as 1 Public Health Reports, Dec. 15, 1922, p. 3122.

On December 5, 1922, measures to prevent further spread were stated to be in force, including disinfection of railway cars and medical examination of arrivals at the port.

CUBA.

Communicable Diseases --Habana.

Communicable diseases have been notified at Habana as follows:

Communicable diseases were reported in Czechoslovakia during the month of October, 1922, as follows:

Dysentery-Rabies-Malaria-October, 1922.

During the same period, 177 cases of dysentery with 35 deaths, 2 fatal cases of rabies, and 5 cases of malaria were reported.

ECUADOR.

Plague-Infected Rats Guayaquil.

During the period December 1-15, 1922, out of 4,100 rats examined, 6 rats were found plague infected.

HAITI.

Bacillary Dysentery.

Under date of December 26, 1922, bacillary dysentery was stated to be endemic in certain sections of the Republic of Haiti.

INDIA.

Anthrax Burma - October, 1922.

The veterinary department of Burma, India, during the month of October, 1922, reported outbreaks of anthrax, occurring in the military police lines, Pyawbwe, Yamethin district, and in two townships each of the districts of Mandalay and Meiktila, Burma.

Anthrax-Madras Presidency-September, 1922.

During the month of September, 1922, 206 deaths from anthrax in the Presidency of Madras, India, were reported by the civil veterinary department of the Presidency.

IRELAND.

Outbreak of Typhus Fever-Belmullet.

Information dated December 14, 1922, shows an outbreak of typhus fever at Belmullet, County Mayo, Ireland. The disease was stated to have appeared about June 15, 1922, and to have continued to appear at intervals with a total of 20 cases reported to December 14, 1922. The origin of the outbreak was attributed to overcrowding in an unused coast-guard station in which refugee families had taken shelter. Belmullet was stated to be a long-recognized typhus fever district, the population being congested, living in poor economic conditions and housing animals in dwellings.

JAMAICA.

"Alastrim."

During the three weeks ended December 30, 1922, 75 new cases of "alastrim" were reported in the island of Jamaica.

Typhoid Fever-Kingston and Vicinity.

During the same period, 12 cases of typhoid fever were reported at Kingston, Jamaica, and 23 cases in the surrounding country.

JAPAN.

Plague-Osaka.

Under date of December 12, 1922, plague was reported spreading in Osaka, Japan, a city of 1,252,972 population, situated 20 miles east of Kobe. Sporadic outbreaks began to appear in July, 1922,

and the cases officially reported during the period July 1 to November 30, 1922, are as follows:

A sharp increase in the number of new cases is shown for the latter part of October and the month of November, and it is stated that the disease has spread from the district in which it originated to two other wards of the city.

The sanitary authorities have taken measures to suppress the disease, including quarantine, rat-proofing, and rat eradication. Plagueinfected rats have been killed in all sections of the city.

The American consul at Kobe has taken precautionary measures to prevent the transmission of the disease to the United States. These measures were adopted shortly after the appearance of the first case of the disease, and consist of the following:

1. All vessels leaving Osaka Harbor for the United States must be fumigated before a bill of health is granted.

2. All merchandise which may carry infected fleas, such as rags, old clothing, etc., must be thoroughly disinfected before shipment to the United States.

3. All merchandise which may attract rats, such as fruits and vegetables, must be packed in crates into which rats can not enter, before shipment to the United States.

PANAMA CANAL.

Communicable Diseases-November, 1922.

Communicable diseases were notified for the Panama Canal during the month of November, 1922, as follows:

Quarantine Against Ports in Chiriqui Province Removed.

Inspection of the western portion of Chiriqui Province, Republic of Panama, of which report was received under date of December 26, 1922, shows practically no smallpox present there. Varicella (chicken pox) was stated to be prevalent. In the eastern portion of the Province a few cases of smallpox were believed to be present in the vicinity of Remedios. It was stated that there was very little maritime communication with that portion of the Republic.

The quarantine circular issued by the chief quarantine officer, Panama Canal, December 22, 1921, imposing maritime quarantine against Chiriqui Province, Republic of Panama, on account of the presence there of smallpox, was declared canceled December 26, 1922.

RUSSIA.

Communicable Diseases-Esthonia-November, 1922. Communicable diseases were notified in the Province of Esthonia, Russia, during the month of November, 1922, as follows:

Under date of December 18, 1922, the occurrence of a case of plague was reported at Barcelona, Spain, for the period November 15December 18, 1922. The total number of reported cases from September 24 to November 14, 1922, was 23, with 9 deaths.

VIRGIN ISLANDS.

Disease Prevalence-November, 1922.

During the month of November, 1922, disease prevalence was reported in the Virgin Islands as follows:
