After administering the constitutional oaths, His Excellency the Governor, attended by the Honorable Council and Secretary of State, withdrew from the representatives' ball.

The House was then called to order by Samuel C. Clark, clerk of the House for the last year.

The clerk stated that the first business before the House was to select a temporary presiding officer.

On motion of Mr. Noyes of Chester, Aaron F. Stevens of Nashua was chosen temporary chairman; and the clerk appointed Messrs. Noyes of Chester and Hiland of Manchester a committee to conduct him to the chair.

The temporary chairman having taken the chair,

On motion of Mr. Moore of Nashua, the House proceeded to the election of speaker, by ballot, with the following result:

and Charles P. Sanborn, having a majority of all the votes cast, was declared elected speaker.

Messrs. Moore of Nashua and Harry Bingham of Littleton were appointed a committee to conduct the speaker elect to the chair.

On assuming the chair the speaker addressed the House as follows:

Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen:

I thank you for this expression of your confidence in my ability to preside over your deliberations. My effort will be

to carry out your will impartially. I shall bring to the discharge of my duties only a limited experience, but you shall have with it an honest purpose. If, with your help, at the close of this session, I shall have proved to you that my professions are true, I hope and trust that you will have no cause for complaint, nor I for regret. For the completion of the organization of the House, gentlemen, I await any order.

On motion of Mr. Jewell of Plymouth,

Resolved, That Charles C. Danforth of Concord be elected clerk of the House of Representatives, and Alpheus W. Baker of Lebanon be elected assistant clerk for the ensuing year.

On motion of Mr. Ordway of Warner,

Resolved, That Atherton W. Quint of Manchester be elected sergeant-at-arms of the House for the ensuing year.

On motion of Mr. Hiland of Manchester,

Resolved, That Charles E. Cummings of Concord, John B. Cooper of Newport, and Lewis Jenkins of Gilmanton, be elected doorkeepers of the House for the ensuing year.

On motion of Mr. Fletcher of Rumney,

Resolved, That a committee of ten be appointed to nominate a chaplain of the House for the present session.

On motion of Mr. Moore of Nashua,

Resolved, That the Rules of the House for the last session be the Rules of the House for the present session, until otherwise ordered by the House.

On motion of Mr. Hiland of Manchester,

Resolved, That the hours of assembling of the House be at ten o'clock in the forenoon and three o'clock in the afternoon, until otherwise ordered by the House.

Charles C. Danforth, clerk elect, and Alpheus W. Baker of Lebanon, assistant clerk elect, appeared and were respectively qualified for said offices by taking the oaths prescribed by law.

Atherton W. Quint of Manchester appeared, and was qualified as sergeant-at-arms, by taking the oath of office.

Charles E. Cummings of Concord, John B. Cooper of Newport, and Lewis Jenkins of Gilmanton appeared, and severally took the oath of office as doorkeepers.

On motion of Mr. Hiland of Manchester the House adjourned.

MESSAGE FROM THE SENATE.

The following message was received from the Honorable Senate by their clerk:

Mr. Speaker:

I am directed to announce that the Senate has assembled, and is organized by the choice of Hon. Charles Holman, president, Tyler Westgate, clerk, and Calvin Sanders assistant clerk, and are now ready to proceed with the business of the session.

On motion of Mr. Warren of Rochester,

Resolved, That the speaker be authorized to appoint two persons to act as pages.

The speaker announced that he had appointed Charles H. Leighton and Arthur F. Shepard, of Concord, pages to the House.

On motion of Mr. Danforth of Nashua,

Resolved, That the Honorable Senate be informed that the House of Representatives has organized by the choice of Hon. Charles P. Sanborn as speaker, Charles C. Danforth, clerk, Alpheus W. Baker, assistant clerk, and Atherton W. Quint as sergeant-at-arms, and is now ready to proceed with the business of the session.

On motion of Mr. Tucker of Gilford, the members of the House proceeded to draw seats, agreeably to the provisions of the General Statutes.

On motion of Mr. Moore of Nashua,

Resolved, That a committee of ten be appointed on the part of the House, with such as the Senate may join, to wait on His Excellency the Governor, and inform him that a quorum of both branches of the legislature have assembled and completed the organization, and are ready to receive any communication he may be pleased to make.

The speaker announced as such committee on the part of the House, Messrs. Moore of Nashua, Vilas of Alstead, Willis of Claremont, Carter of Littleton, Lane of Whitefield, Smith of Wakefield, Hayes of Alton, Thurston of Franklin, Carter of Somersworth, Edgerly of Epping.

On motion of Mr. Weed of Sandwich,

Resolved, That the Honorable Senate be informed that the House is now ready to meet them in convention for the purpose of proceeding with the elections, agreeably to the provisions of the consitution.

On motion of Mr. Gilmore of Manchester,

Resolved, That the clerk be instructed to procure for the use of the members and officers of the House 400 copies each of the Concord Daily Patriot, Daily People, Daily Monitor, and Manchester Daily Mirror.

On motion of Mr. Ordway of Warner,

Resolved, That the Joint Rules of the Senate and House for last year be adopted as the Joint Rules of the Senate and House for the present year, until otherwise ordered.

IN CONVENTION.

The Honorable Senate having met the House in convention for the purpose of proceeding in the elections,

On motion of Mr. Pattee of Enfield, the Honorable Secretary of State was requested to lay before the convention the return

of votes for governor and councillors cast at the last annual election.

Thereupon the Honorable Secretary of State appeared, and laid before the convention the votes for governor and councillors cast at the last annual election.

On motion of Mr. Gilmore of Manchester,

Resolved, That the votes for governor and councillors be referred to a select commitee of three, to examine, compare, and cast the same, and report thereon.

The speaker appointed as such committee,

Messrs. Briggs of the Senate, Gilmore of Manchester, and Jewell of Plymouth.

On motion of Mr. Moore of Nashua, the convention rose.

IN HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

On motion of Mr. Ordway of Warner, the House adjourned.

THURSDAY, JUNE 8, 1876.

The House met at ten o'clock a. M.

The clerk proceeded to the reading of the journal of yester day, when, on motion of Mr. Jameson of Antrim, the rules were suspended, and the further reading dispensed with.

The speaker announced as the committee to nominate a chaplain,
