THE system of underground pumping by means of directacting engines placed near the water is now a most important one, and promises to become more so. The author believes therefore that an account of some of the most prominent engines belonging to it, the principle of their construction, the method of their action, their capacities, prices, working economy, &c., and the comparative value of this system of mine drainage, will be of some service to mining engineers and capitalists. The addresses of the makers of the engines, which are given in every case, will be found a convenience to those who may have to communicate with them. In describing the various engines, he has, as far as possible, endeavoured to give such details as will be interesting both to the engineer and miner; and to deal with the practical results, which more particularly concern the miner and which are the only considerations to which he is likely to give his serious attention. It may be well to state, in order to explain the absence of the names of many firstclass makers, whose engines, it may be, are as excellent as any that are noticed, that it formed no part of the author's task to furnish an index to the very numerous manufacturers of the engines comprised in this system of drainage. Such information must be sought in the trade journals and business directories. The examples given include makers of the highest repute, whose names are familiar in the mining districts of the two hemispheres, and the address being given in every case, whoever makes mining his pursuit will observe where he may procure, for any drainage operations he may
