A PHONETIC DICTIONARY OF THE

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Based on the Symbols of the International Phonetic Association.

By HERMANN MICHAELIS, Head Master of the Mittelschule' in Biebrich, and DANIEL JONES, M.A., Lecturer on Phonetics at University College, London.

470 pages, Demy 8vo, Boards, 7s. net.

In

In the past, the written language has been looked up to as being the only form of the language worthy of respect. One result of this reverence has been that innumerable 'spelling-pronunciations are creeping into the language. dictation, owing to our present system of spelling, children cannot help making innumerable mistakes. The teacher is accordingly constrained, often quite unconsciously, to pronounce the words in such a way as to indicate the spelling. These spelling pronunciations are naturally adopted by the children, and in course of time become definitely incorporated into the language.

It is hoped that the present dictionary may convince the educated public of the desirability of studying the spoken language in preference to the conventional written language, and that it may prove useful to the students of linguistic science in general. Hitherto, such students have been greatly hampered by the current orthography of many languages. Now, however, many important questions relating to English linguistic science can be studied with far greater

ease.

This dictionary is intended further for use in the practical study of English. It will be useful in various ways:

(1) A person hearing the word for the first time, and being in doubt as to the spelling, may ascertain the current spelling by looking it up in the dictionary.

(2) A person meeting with an unfamiliar word in a phonetic text may ascertain its current spelling by reference to the phonetic dictionary.

(3) The dictionary may even be read with profit. A foreigner, for instance, may learn much by simply reading down the lists of words beginning with, say, jor rai.

The pronunciation represented is that used by persons of culture in the South England. This form of pronunciation is chosen not because it is superior to any other, but because it is that generally found most useful by those studying the English language.

The phonetic alphabet used in this book is that of the International Phonetic Association. A list of symbols with their values is given on page xi of the book.

'It is impossible to refuse a tribute of admiration to the solid and faithful work done in A Phonetic Dictionary of the English Language. The compilers hope that the book will be useful both for the practical study of English.. and for the consideration of questions relating to linguistic science. The method followed is to give the words first in the phonetic transcription, and then, in their conventional spelling, as “ba: li," followed by its equivalent "barley," thick type being used for the former and ordinary type for the latter. Grammatical and other indications have been added as they seem to be required.'-Guardian.

"Parallel pages of French and English narrative convey the instruction in an interesting form. The method has the advantage of teaching by phrases taken with their appropriate context, and also of being no less valuable to English than to French students."-Journal of Education.

"It is not often that so perfectly satisfactory a first book as this comes in our way. Though it is strictly confined to the essential elements of the language, these are so clearly stated and so admirably arranged that, provided the lessons are, as the author requires, 'thoroughly mastered," a good practical knowledge may be acquired. The classification of nouns and verbs is at once theoretically correct and practically easy. This neat little volume is printed in clear, bold type."-The Athenæum.
