German Grammars, Exercise Books, etc. (continued.) Commarmond and Meister, German Lessons on the

Direct Method.

For Beginners and Elementary Classes.

A Practical Com

bination of the Direct and Inductive Methods, based on Familiar Subjects (Home and School, Family, the Seasons, Parts of the Body, the Five Senses, Toilet, Food, Clothes, etc.).

By F. COMMARMOND, Professeur agrégé at the Lycée Condorcet, and L. MEISTER, Projesseur agrégé at the Lycée Voltaire. 208 pages, with 147 Illustrations. Demy 8vo. Cloth, 2s. 6d.

The Teaching is Direct in the sense that it avoids, as far as possible, the use of the mother-tongue. The foreign words, dialogues, and each reading piece are, at first, associated with an object, picture, or action, and then developed by means of questions and exercises on the terms and phrases already learnt.

The Teaching is Inductive in the sense that, starting with concrete examples, it leads inferentially to the clear understanding and mastery of abstract rules and expressions. Grammar is not neglected, but is closely allied with the acquisition of the vocabulary. Simple inductions, questions, exercises, and phonetic models take the pupil, by easy logical stages, through all the essentials of German accidence and pronunciation.

The earlier Lessons (I. to VI.) are given in ordinary Roman type, the remaining ninety-four being printed in German characters. At regular intervals (from the twentieth lesson onwards) short easy poems and songs are introduced.

Continuity of method exists throughout, each grammatical point occurring in its natural place, and revision lessons are duly provided at the end of the volume.

Compiled by J. F. DAVIS, D. LIT., M.A., LL.B. (Lond.), Formerly
Examiner in the University of London and at the College of Pre-
ceptors, etc. etc. 280 pages.
Crown 8vo. Cloth, 3s.

De Valette, Die Direkte Methode.

By MARC DE VALETTE, Licencié ès Lettres (Langues) et Licencié en Droit: Book I.-102 pages. Demy 8vo. Cloth, 3s.

Book II.-102 pages. Demy 8vo. Cloth, 3s. The features of this method are: Clearness-Simplicity-Progression-Frequent Revision. The lessons, based on the Auxiliary Pictures of the Delmas Series (see page 154), lead by easy, interesting stages from familiar and concrete examples to abstract ideas and more intricate constructions. Initial difficulties are carefully analysed and amply elucidated by the simplest inductive phrases-the verbs, for example, being employed at first in the Indicative Present only, whilst, later on, fundamental rules are developed by numerous division lessons in the form of graduated conversations, dialogues, and short reading pieces.

(For full particulars of the Series see page 159.)

German Grammars, Exercise Books, etc. (continued). German Lessons on the Gouin Method.

Features:-The teaching is oral-based on the phrase and not on the words. The phrases are connected by a natural sequence-the first phrase calling up the second, this one the third, and so on. When the conversational matter of each Lesson is mastered, the grammar is deduced therefrom, the rules being given at the foot of each page.

Illustrated German Primer. First Steps in German.
Introduction to the Study of German for Beginners, by W.
COLLETT SANDARS, Taylorian Exhibitioner, Oxford. Entirely
new and enlarged Edition with Vocabulary. 100 pp. Cr. 8vo. CI.

The essential elementary nature of this volume has led to the exclusion
of all grammatical rules, and of reference to the structure and idiom of the
language. But though the little volume has been entitled a Primer, it is
intended, though its subject-matter is suitable for the young, to prove useful
also to those who, though not children in years, may wish to learn the German
character as it is printed in the present day. In the case of Beginners, who
are of an age when the mind more readily receives instruction through the
eye, it is hoped that the accompanying illustrations will produce the wished-
for effect of arousing the interest, and aiding in the retention of words.

"Conversation is practised from the very beginning, and is based on the reading passage of each lesson. After the methodical part or some portion of it is gone through, and the student is acquainted with the chief elements of grammar as inferred from the reading passage, he should study the following systematic grammar part, which will impart to him grammar as a whole, and teach him to comprehend the true genius of the grammatical framework and its contents. Special care has been taken to impart a knowedge of everyday phrases and idioms, without which no study of a foreign anguage can be complete. Dr. Lange calculates that by using these courses the time of learning a language at school will be about two years less than is wanted for any other method (supposing the same number of hours is allowed for each); while a private student with proper time at his disposal, will be able in twelve months to master a language so as to read and write it fluently and also to converse in it."-Devon and Exeter Daily Gazette. German Composition and Translation.

Lange, Graduated German Prose Writing, including Extracts from English Authors, Copious Notes, Questions, a Correspondence Part, and Vocabulary. By FRANZ LANGE, Ph.D. 200 pp. Cl. 36 "The arrangement in the Junior and Intermediate Parts is similar. First comes a series of grammatical rules both in accidence and syntax which are to be committed to memory. These are followed by a large number of short but continuous passages for translation into German. The notes at the end of each of these passages are precisely what the young pupil requires. There is also, at the end of each part, a well-selected collection of grammatical questions to be answered in writing. The Senior Part contains no special sections in grammar, the passages for translation are longer and more difficult, and the notes are fewer in number. The fourth part of the book deals with the writing of letters in German, and is arranged under two separate heads: Familiar and Formal Correspondence. This is a most important part of the Manual, and will be found especially useful to candidates for commercial certificates."-School Guardian.

Dr. Meissner here shows once more how well he knows the English language and the difficulties of English students of German. A number of selected graduated passages for translation are given, to which Dr. Meissner adds some, but not too many hints, further information being supplied by an English-German vocabulary, which appears to have been compiled with great care."-Educational Times.
