Latin Grammar, Classics, etc.

A New Elementary Latin Grammar adapted for English Schools, s. d. by the Rev. H. BELCHER, M.A. (Lond.), Fellow of King's College, London.

Part I.-The Accidence. 212 pages. Crown 8vo. Cloth I 6 Part II.-The Syntax. 290 pages. Crown 8vo. Cloth I 6 The 2 Parts-Accidence and Syntax, complete in 1 Vol. Cloth 2 6 "The letterpress used for the essentials of grammar is bold and plain, while that employed for subordinate and exceptional matter is smaller, but very distinct, and the typographical expedients for gaining attention to the more important details are carefully planned and consistently carried out. The new Grammar is full in the exposition of the etymology and accidence, but it is in the syntax that the freshness of form and the excellence of plan are most apparent.... We commend it heartily."-Educational News.

Sloan-Duployan Shorthand

SOME OF ITS ADVANTAGES

(1) The entire system is reduced to a compass of twelve Lessons.

(2) It is readily grasped by school children, owing to freedom from complication.

(3) Vowels are written in their natural order without lifting the hand.

(4) The outlines are shorter than those of any other system. (5) Its brevity renders a high speed quickly attainable. (6) It does away with the necessity of memorizing multitudes of rules, grammalogues, and phrases.

The system has been awarded twelve gold medals; approved by the Government Education Departments (English and Scotch); highly praised by His Majesty's Inspectors; adopted by the London and other School Boards; taught in 3000 Government elementary schools in France; recognised by the Military Authorities; officially recognised at all Civil Service Examinations, Society of Arts Examinations, etc. The Shorthand Speed Championship of the United States has been held by a Sloan-Duployan writer for eleven Years in succession.

THE DIRECT METHOD FOR TEACHING
MODERN LANGUAGES.

By MARC DE VALETTE

Licencié ès Lettres (Langues) et Licencié en Droit.

The features of this Method are: Clearness-SimplicitySystematic Progression- Frequent Revision.

Thanks to the pictures and object lessons upon which this Method is based (Tableaux Delmas,-see pages 161 to 164), the teacher has at his disposal the best material for being Clear.

For the sake of Simplicity, the Author has broken up the difficulties. Throughout the whole of the First Book, for example, the Verbs are only used in the Present Tense. In this First Book, the pupil is required to learn a fairly large vocabulary and some grammatical forms, such as Pronouns, Comparisons of Adjectives, Possessive Case, Irregular Plural of Nouns. These difficulties should not be mixed up with

those of the l'erb.

Progression:-The Method begins with the Simplest objects, so as to rise gradually to the knowledge of the most complicated. It appeals first to the senses which are according to a celebrated philosopher "the doors of the soul." Proceeding, like Nature, by degrees, the Author reaches the abstract by means of the concrete.

Revision:-In order to make sure that what has been grasped and seen has been well grasped and seen, the Author has given, at the end of the volume, all the rules of Grammar studied in a disguised and almost imperceptible manner during the course of the Lessons. The Grammatical Revision, which is in the form of dialogues and conversation, constitutes a veritable and valuable innovation.

The Second Volume is devoted more particularly to exercises on and practices in the Verbs in the various Persons and Tenses. The Delmas Pictures, nevertheless, will still prove helpful, but the Teacher will be careful to avoid the use of unusual names or unfamiliar expressions. He will also bear in mind that "the Verb" is the life and soul of the language.

5 0 The Lessons in the English, French, and German Courses, although arranged on the same plan (and serving practically as "Keys" one to the other), are not mere literal translations of each other. Similarity of method has been retained, but grammatical and idiomatic peculiarities, the varying customs of the different countries, etc., necessi tate slight variations of the phrases in one or other of the adaptations.
