"En publiant ces 'Conversations françaises nous croyons être utiles à tous ceux qui veulent enseigner ou apprendre le français. Avant tout nous avons cherché la clarté et le ton habituel d'une vraie causerie. Aussi point de listes de mots, car ceux-ci appris isolément s'oublient fort vite; point de phrases vides de sens qui découragent même les meilleures volontés, mais toujours des phrases usuelles. It is of the highest importance to a pupil that his early training in any language should be connected with his life surroundings. The method here proposed presents him with the pictures of familiar objects, which, by giving him additional pleasure in the things themselves, enable the teacher to impress on the child's mind the foreign words for them, and help to develop the pupil's ability to think and to express himself in a strange tongue. Everyone who has learned a foreign language will readily appreciate the greater interest and consequent facilities afforded to the child when it hears the names of persons, animals and objects in pictures spoken in a foreign tongue, and learns also to converse in short easy phrases and sentences based on incidents suggested by the pictures. The lessons are carefully graduated and adapted to the intelligence of quite young pupils.

In working out these Conversations on a View of London, the writers have kept as closely as possible within the limits of objects visible on the picture. As this picture, however, is the tenth of the Series, the writers have concluded that it would probably be used in the higher classes, and have therefore entered into some details with regard to St. Paul's, Westminster Abbey, and the Tower of London. For the same reason special characteristics of the English have been occasionally referred to.
