The method adopted by Messrs. GENIN and SCHAMANEK in their Text Books: "Conversations Françaises," has proved so successful for teaching purposes, that we have undertaken to produce a similar book in English. These depict everyday life and instruct children by an easy and entertaining process. Children are thereby induced to ask questions and to frame their own answers. The Summary, which shows at a glance the contents of each volume, is followed by a Vocabulary which, phased under different titles, attracts the attention and aids the memory. Following the Vocabulary, are given descrip. tions and questions, a conversation, a few exercises, and a story or poem. The different paragraphs of the description have been numbered in accordance with the questions.

HÖLZEL'S HISTORICAL PICTURES

(NEW AND CHEAPER ISSUE.)

THIS well-known Series now comprises over seventy productions of oilcolour print, illustrating some of the most important monuments of Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and Modern Times.

The designs show evident proofs of artistic discernment and exquisite taste; the subject-matter is arranged with great discernment and skill; the representation is scrupulously correct, the forms are struck out in bold relief with due regard to light and shade, and the perspective prospects are accurately delineated.

These plates are in use in all the better Government and private schools of Austria and Germany. The numerous opinions of the press and of the highest authorities in these countries show sufficiently their value, not only as works of art, but as a medium for promoting the better knowledge of History, the History of Art, and of Drawing.

The Medal of Merit has been awarded to the Series at the International Exhibition of Vienna, the Silver Medal at Paris, the First Prize at Melbourne, and the First Prize at Dorpat. The Publisher and Author obtained from the Emperor of Austria the Gold Medal for Arts and Sciences and the Gold Cross of Merit.

Size of Plates: Height, 24 inches; Width, 32 inches.

The steadily increasing popularity of these pictures has enabled the
Publishers to issue them at the following REDUCED prices:

"Admirably adapted to their purpose; they give in a small compass every necessary piece of information about even the most out-of-the-way spots, and are invaluable companions for the tourist who likes to take his holiday on the go-as-you-please system. The illustrations give a good idea of what to expect to see, and are numerous and clear. For a purely business guide they can be thoroughly recommended."-The World.

"Information well arranged,. .. maps and illustrations . . . excellent."-Daily News. "The reputation which these guides enjoy in their own country has induced Messrs. Hachette to supply an English edition of some of the volumes. In each of them the descriptive and historical matter is ample. Abundant space and special care have been given to that practical information which, however commonplace and unromantic in itself, is of the first importance to all intending visitors. If they are in doubt as to the simplest and easiest way of getting there, Joanne will advise them, and will tell them the expense of travelling by each of the routes he indicates. When they have got there he will supply them with the fullest particulars as to the means of securing a local habitation, whether in hotel or pension or private village. In fact, there is nothing they can reasonably want to know about, that Joanne has not thought of before them."-Glasgow Herald. [For French Guides see overleaf.
