REPORT.

To His Excellency, Governor Austin:

The Board of Regents beg leave to submit the following annual report of the condition of the University of Minnesota for the fiscal year ending Dec. 22d, 1871:

During the past year the University has enjoyed a large measure of prosperity and seems to be rapidly gaining more and more the confidence and patronage of the citizens of the State.

COLLEGIATE DEPARTMENT.

The students in the different courses in this department are being subject to a thorough discipline and are accomplishing that preparation for higher education which it is the aim of the department to provide. The Latin school which is furnishing instruction to large classes in the lower branches, is still doing successful work, but will be suspended so soon as the schools of the State have more fully developed.

FACULTY.

Since our last report the board of instruction has been. reduced by resignation of Maj. Gen'l R. W. Johnson, Prof. of Military Science, and correspondingly increased by the election of Miss Helen Sutherland, M. A., as instructor in Latin and preceptress of the collegiate department.
