"Wood Carving is one of the mechanical arts practised in the present day by amateurs of both sexes, and it is chiefly to assist these that Mr. Bemrose's Manual is intended; its plan is brief but comprehensive. The first plate exhibits the different kinds of tools necessary to the operation, and their uses are explained in the letterpress. This plate is followed by several others, consisting of Mouldings, Panels, Tablets, Pilasters, Picture-frames, Furniture, both Domestic and Ecclesiastical, each plate being accompanied by text describing the process of carving the objects. The examples are well selected and engraved with much accuracy and delicacy. -Art Journal,

Fret Cutting and Perforated Carving.

"Worthy of the former work, 'Manual of Wood Carving,' by which our author is so favourably known. Amateurs likely to employ their time in fret cutting and perforated carving, will here find suitable directions for the practice of this graceful yet useful art, laid down by one thoroughly master of its details. The illustrations are inimitable and the book is a marvel of cheapness.-John Bull.

[blocks in formation]

"This is a sequel by W. Bemrose to his two popular books on wood carving and frescutting. The present, like its predecessors, is written for amateurs, but trained workmen would find in it not a few useful hints, as well as a collection of beautiful designs. Buhl-work and marquetry have not hitherto been com sidered within the province of amateurs, nor have they been classed amongst amusement and pastimes; but so concise and sufficient, and apparently so easy of execution, are M. Bemrose's instructions, that we should not be surprised to find these beautiful arts becom popular. The illustrations are both numerouS and beautiful."—Public Opinion.

"Very considerable excellence and very gratifying results can be achieved without any excessive amount of application, and by the exercise of even moderate ability and ordinary perseverance. The tools required are few and inexpensive, and the materials are plain and cheap. A special recommendation of the art is that nothing seems better for an amateur to work on than the old card-tables, work boxes, cabinets, and so on, which are to be found in most houses, usually the worse for wear and service; yet these are precisely the very best subjects for the amateur Buhl-workers to operate on, as by the exercise of a little skill and labour he may cover them with very beautiful and elegant decorations, and convert them inta most charming additions to the furnishing of a room."-Belfast Northern Whig.

Mosaicon,

Sixteen Designs for Sofa and

By MRS. WARREN. Price Is.
Paper Rosette Work and How
to Make it.

Plainly Illustrated and Described by Thirty-six Lithographed Designs of various Useful and Ornamental Objects; by W. BEMROSE. Sixth Edition. Price Sixpence.

"The decoration of churches and dwellinghouses at Christmas-time has always been popular; but from the scarcity of bright flowers at this time of the year, it has long been the custom to substitute rosettes, stars, crosses, &c., on coloured paper. The difficulty hitherto has been to get the paper strips of uniform width. This is now accomplished by machinery; and very charmingly pretty designs may be produced when the designs are properly set on cardboard. To facilitate the Decorator, Mr. W. Bemrose has produced a couple of handy little books, containing all the necessary directions, with diagrams showing exactly how the paper slips are to be folded, cut, tinted, varnished and mounted. The diagrams are so plain that with a little practice any young lady may make a room look bright, cheerful, and seasonable."-Lithographer.

Bemrose's Star Rosette Papers. Cut mathematically correct to nine different widths. In Silver and Gold, at Is. per packet; in Cream (to imitate ivory), Violet, Light and Dark Brown, Ebony, Red, Primrose, Orange, Cedar, Light and Dark Blues, &c., at 6d. per packet.

"The quality of the paper submitted to our notice appears to be exactly of the required substance and manufacture requisite for successful effect when plaited."-Queen. Card Board Foundations.

Or PAPER MOSAIC and How to Make
it, with full Instructions, Diagrams, and
Coloured Plates; by W. BEMROSE.
Price Is.

"Messrs. BEMROSE & Sons, ef Derby who have produced many interesting and useful works, send to us a little book of models and

structions, with a specimen of an art they term 'Mosaicon.' I consists ir maying various coloured papers in frame-work o wood, forms being given to the paper by means of their being curled or bent into shapes to represent flowers, geometric, or other designs. It would be difficult to devise a pleasure s rue, it far surpasses in exercise of ingenuity and in art teaching all the more recent idie enjoyments of home life, perhaps even those or the needle-certainly those of the knittingneedle. We have not sought to explain-in truth, explanation in a brief space would be impossible; but a card Messrs Bemrose for Information is all taa io required "-Art Journal.

"This is a new art, whereby beautiful articles resembling Mosaic, may be made from paper of various hues. It appears extremely simple to earn, and, when once acquired, the worker may soon become an adept at it. The instruction are clear and concise, while the models are quite art treasures is themselves. By means of this new process any old box-cigar boxes are especially good-can be transformed, with very little expense and trouble, into beautiful and useful ornaments for the toilet table or drawing room. Its properties are very lasting, and, with a little taste, the work can be made to resemble a casket of jewels. We feel sure that when it gets more widely known it will become very popular with ladies who desire to enhance the appearance of their homes with elegant ornaments at a trifling cost."-Sheffield Post.

OPINIONS

Of H. M. Inspectors of Schools, of Teachers and of the Press.

WHAT H. M. INSPECTORS SAY:

"I wish the Department would allow me a little more latitude in the recommendation of School Books, for I consider yours have come as a boon and a Jubilee blessing to the rising generation. What with the intelligent lines laid in your Lower Primer, and continued so thoroughly through the Upper, with the companion book, called the Infants' Aid, and the novel departure in Standard I. from all books of its kind, I reckon these early works have only to be seen by intelligent Teachers to be adopted. If your Infants' Aid were in common use, bad spelling would be a thing of the past, and the Code would be found an exact and just gauge.'

"I am pleased to notice that the matter is fresher than in many Readers, and that the tone of the Books is thoroughly good."

"They seem to be very well adapted to their purpose, and very well got up."

"A well bound and carefully graduated series, admirably adapted for Elementary Schools."

WHAT TEACHERS SAY:

"Thanks for the specimen you kindly sent. I mean to introduce your whole series of Readers, which I consider the best I have seen. Meantime I have ordered through

copies of your 'Infant's Aid' for all the boys in my First Standard. After a few days' trial I can see the great utility of this book. It was the very book I was looking out for-one that classifies our power sounds, and forms a key note to all our words. The Book has come at last, and no Teacher should be with out it."—A Lincolnshire Teacher. "I received copies of your Primers, Infants' Aid, and Readers I., II., and III., last week. I am really charmed with them all. From the way in which you lead up, by your ingenious key note in the Lower Primer, and your more extended one in the Infants' Aid, followed by the quaint and telling lessons in Standard I. Reader, I can see a plan in your works that never appeared in any of their predecessors. I do not consider the Code a whit too high now that we have such Books as yours, and I hope they will find their way into the majority of Schools in the kingdom, for they are bound to be a great boon to the rising generation."-A Scotch Teacher.

"You have hit the mark. Any practical eye can soon see the grand design of your Primer, Infants' Aid, and early Readers. Any child who has been intelligently put through the Infants' Aid will possess a knowledge of the English language at an early stage, and will be able to spell in a systematic manner. I consider this small book a boon to the rising generation."-A Member of a School Board and a Head Master of a Grammar School.

WHAT THE PRESS SAYS:

"The Lower Primer is to some extent on the plan of learning to read by sight and sound, with an aim at word-making all through. The small Alphabet is given in a pretty tabulated framework at the beginning, followed by the Alphabet in capitals, and then the small and large Alphabets are repeated in the italic form. There is also a Table of the Figures. There are no unmeaning syllables in the early lessons, but exercises in words of two letters precede sentence making; and the easy sentence making is followed quickly by connected little reading lessons of the very simplest character, in harmony with the things which the infant mind is interested in. The woodcuts at the head of the pages are excellent and suitable, and are always illustrations of the lesson. One is a pretty portrait of the Queen as a little child. The plan is to talk to the child about the picture, then to get him to spell the key words at the head of the lesson, and then to read the passage. The pictures are not mere embellishments or entertainments for the children; they are part of a method of object lesson making capital in the teaching of the lesson. -The School Board Chronicle.

"The Standard I. reader contains some really admirable lessons, every one of which teaches something useful. The lessons on 'Drawing a Goose,' 'Drawing a Pig,' &c. are quaint and novel, and in the hands of a good teacher are likely to popularise the lessons very much. There is, indeed, a freshness about the whole book which will at once commend itself to favourable notice."-Teacher's Aid.
