This is indeed so far the case that in the preparation of the present volume, it has not been found necessary to omit more than half a dozen lines from the whole play, and the Editor is able to offer to the higher forms in schools and the public in general, one of the masterpieces of eighteenth century wit, without the fear that his readers may encounter any of those expressions or thoughts, unfortunately too common "dans un siècle," Beaumarchais says, "où l'hypocrisie de la décence est poussée aussi loin que le relâchement des mœurs.' |
