The Daily Chronicle says: "The best Encyclopædia ever brought out. We

T.P.'s Weekly says: "The best Encyclopædia in the language. It is a miracle
of accuracy, of fullness, and of cheapness.'

information on almost any topic, nothing can compare with Chambers's Encyclo-
pædia."

Sir WALTER BESANT said: "A most excellent and trustworthy compendium of knowledge. I cannot imagine any difficulty which this work would not meet."

Chambers's Concise Gazetteer of the World.

Thoroughly New and Revised Edition.
LL.D.

Edited by DAVID PATRICK,
One vol., 768 pages, cloth, net 6s.

Pronouncing, Topographical, Statistical, Historical.

FEATURES OF THE WORK:

Latest and most reliable information regarding places at home and abroad.
Populations according to the latest census.

Authentic official figures in reference to revenue, expenditure, debt, trade, army
and navy, &c., of every country and state.

Etymology of the names where it is significant and interesting.
Pronunciation in all cases where doubt could arise.

Athenæum says: "In nineteen carefully selected tests of the 'Revised Edition'
of Chambers's Concise Gazetteer of the World, published by Messrs W. & R.
Chambers, of Edinburgh, we have failed to find a fault. Eighteen yielded entries, in
every instance satisfactory. The nineteenth was a case in which we doubted the
wisdom of inclusion, which, however, we then discovered had not taken place. We
ended our inspection with the twentieth reference—one in itself likely to be the subject
of an article, though its appearance would have made the corresponding exclusion in
the previous case indefensible. Again we failed to find matter for criticism, for the
expected article was not there. We can only record the triumph of an improved version
of a reference book already good and useful. The editor of the 'Revised Edition' is
Dr David Patrick."

The advantage of the present volume as a book of reference is that it contains
many phrases and verses the source of which is not generally known or easily found,
thus making it particularly interesting and suggestive to the general reader on
account of the number and variety of the quotations, many of which are from
literary fields not gleaned from in similar works. It will prove of immense value to
Clergymen, Teachers, Public Speakers, Literary Men, and Readers generally.
Commercial men, too, will be wise to study its pages, as a suitable extract will often
prove an effective advertisement, nor is an apt quotation to be despised as a happy
method of clinching a business transaction.

"Quotation, sir, is a good thing; there is a community of mind in it; classical
quotation is the parole of literary men all over the world."-DR Johnson.

The author is singularly happy in getting the point of view of the youthful reader. Having been, during his life, a practical scientist and a successful teacher of boys, he combines the most desirable forms of experience. In this book Professor Houston gives interesting accounts of all the most memorable volcanic eruptions and earthquake shocks of which history bears record, from the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum to the recent disasters of Martinique and San Francisco. Descriptions are given of the volcanoes of Italy, of Mexico, and the Aleutian Islands; also of submarine volcanoes and those of the moon.

The Atmosphere. By Prof. E. J. HOUSTON, Ph.D.

With numerous Illustrations.

The shape, height, and composition of the atmosphere; sound waves, echoes, and sound marvels; climate, "probabilities" and the methods of the weather-bureau ; storms, cyclones, waterspouts, mysterious showers; heat and light; mirages and rainbows are some of the subjects treated in a way that makes the account more fascinating than the most fanciful story.

Electricity for Young People. By TUDOR JENKS. With 8 Illustrations 3s. 6d. Mr Jenks relates the progress of electricity historically, from its first appearance to the ancients as a mysterious force to its present use for light, heat, power, and its more recent remarkable developments in connection with the X-rays, wireless telegraphy, the telautograph, &c. The investigations of the scientists were often attended by the most interesting circumstances, and by following them step by step the young reader cannot fail to understand and remember. Diagrams and photographic illustrations make the descriptions easy to grasp. Mr Jenks is very thorough, and presupposes no technical knowledge whatever on the part of the reader. Photography for Young People. By TUDOR JENks With numerous Illustrations.

[ocr errors]

This book supplies the young reader with a fund of knowledge which enables him to read other photographic literature with profit instead of confusion, and to choose intelligently his camera, lens, and chemicals. Mr Jenks describes the use of the camera, the working of its various parts, the process of negative development, toning or developing the print, and mounting. He then treats the various phases of photography separately in greater detail; exposure; what to take and how to take it; developers; the theory of development; tank development; printing papers, their working, and their comparative value; lenses; and shutters.
