PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.

THE first edition of this little work having been out of print for some time, I have ventured to publish a second, considerably enlarged, and as I hope, improved. Much new matter has been added, and the whole work has undergone a thorough revision. Its production has been to me a labour of love and delight, and I now consign it to the care and consideration of the lovers of the great dramatist, whose works are characterised by so strong a love and knowledge of humanity, that they have completely outshone the works of all others in 'this narrow world of ours.”

CAMBRIDGE, November, 1871.
